Karen, now, now .... this SITPWG is a rather brilliant production. Jenna Russell is not in any way like Julie Andrews (she's a hundred times better actor for starters), and Daniel Evans is not in any way like Tony Blair (not unless Tony Blair has shrunk and suddenly changed from a Scot to a little Welsh man). Jenna and Daniel received West End Olivier awards for their excellent portrayals of Dot and George -- not for imitations of Mary Poppins and an ex Prime Minister.

Dear Anon, you're absolutely right, Gypsy wasn't Bernadette's role.

"Rose" was her role.

And she was fantastic in that role and should have won the Tony.

Morning after comment: In my eyes LuPone is never acting, she's showing-off. It's all on the surface and meant to wow, not to explore anything under the surface.

But that's just my reaction. I would never be so cruel as to disparage the various talents of Patti LuPone. Why, that would be petty on my part and I'm never petty.

By no means am I saying that no one should ever win the Tony for Mama Rose again because Bernadette didn't win. I'm just saying that every snippet of performance I've seen Patti do of the role lacked depth and seemed rushed. Maybe that was because she was on someone else's stage working in someone else's time frame. I'll give her that. Maybe if I was able to make it to NYC to see Gypsy, I'd feel differently. I don't know. But all I know is I've seen her perform a bit of Rose in three different instances, and every time, the same problem was completely evident.

And, yes, they were 2 completely different years of nominees. I just still think that Bernadette was jipped, no matter who she was up against, and Patti's rendition of the role (from what I've seen) was not deserving of the award, no matter who she was up against.

Bernadette was no doubt jipped in 2003. I was very bitter for a long time over that. I wanted nothing to do with Hairspray or Marissa. Then somewhere over the past 5 years, those feelings have somewhat been surpressed with knowing Bernadette was and is the better actress AND singer. While she continues to do great work, Marissa made an attempt at a bad TV movie, a failed sitcom, and Dancing With the Stars.

I don't wish anything bad for Marissa. She is a sweet girl. She's not COMPLETELY lacking in talent. It's just that her fluff role did not deserve a win over Bernadette's Rose. I will always stand by that statement regardless of great work Marissa may do in the future.

If you're not a fan of Patti's Rose in any forum, it may not make a difference. But I will say that I saw her at City Center last Summer, and her Broadway performance had more depth. THAT is why I thought she deserved to win. If I were basing it on last Summer's City Center production, I may feel differently (not that I didn't enjoy it).

Back to the general Tonys topic, how about Liza Minnelli!? Good for her for the short skirt. She looked fantastic. Too bad she lost her shirt somewhere.

And I thought In the heights looked good. I want to see it now.
I also loved the speech by the writer of August: Osage County

I never said no one should win the Tony because Bernadette didn't. Bernadette was robbed in 2003. And as far as I'm concerned Bernadette was by far the best Rose. She owned that role and added incredible layers to it. I found Patti to sound very overly rehearsed and show off her talent as Patti LuPone rather than to show herself as being Rose.

A wee bit off-topic ....a friend sent me a quiz on facebook - but it was a good one, "Which Sondheim Musical Are You?" I had to answer all sorts of questions about my personal preferences in things ranging from my spiritual thoughts to venues for a first date. I answered totally honestly, and it turns out that I am Sunday In The Park With George.

I'm so proud.

Just thought I would post a reply as someone who was at the Tonys last night. To me it was kind of an iffy year for the telecast. Not a lot of star wattage. Nothing was bad but nothing really blew me away either. This was my third year attending and usually there is more excitement in the hall.

I fully admit up front, that it would be hard for me to like Patti in Gypsy because of my love for Bernadette and the fact that I, too, felt she was robbed in 2003. Though as someone said, they weren't in competition with each other and the dynamics of each year's competition are always different. Whether Bernadette was robbed of a Tony for Gypsy or not, I'm not a huge fan of Patti's. I've enjoyed her in a few things but have never been blown away by her. Just my opinion and I know other's love her. I don't deny she has talent but its just usually not my cup of tea. So establishing I don't have the most objective opinion, I found the performance last night rather lackluster as well. I got that Rose was driven and moving her ambitions to her other daughter but for me, that is supposed to be the moment when you really see that Rose is not only driven but literally mentally unstable and she has to really frighten you. That didn't happen for me last night. But Patti has a lot of fans and they are very happy today so good for them. I enjoyed certain parts of her speech but thought it went too far. I enjoy humor but there is graciousness as well. But other's mileage may vary.

South Pacific in the theater is AMAZING! Do not judge it from a medley put together for a theater that does not fit it and filmed for television.

Also, Passing Strange, Karen, I completely understand why you might say you are not the target audience by what you saw but I implore you: If you get a chance to see Passing Strange. GO GO GO. It was one of the best and most moving shows I had seen in a long time. The first about 10 minutes had me worried as I was just not the audience they were after but then it shifted and this really beautiful story about a man's journey to find himself and and learn to appreciate what he has emerged. I was crying the entire last 10 minutes of the show and I NEVER cry. I felt like none of the production numbers came off very well last night which is too bad.

My two kind of exciting moments: I sat next to a Tony Award last night and also talked to Oscar Hammerstein's daughter on the way out. We obviously talked about South Pacific.

"Particular mention must be made of Bernadette Peters, who turns up briefly in a sort of sparkly Glinda the Good costume. She's the reluctant muse sent to help Alice with her writing. "I'm one star away from Dolly Parton ... and Raymond Massey is between us. I hope we don't suffocate him." Bernadette Peters receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, April 24, 1987

Scottie, is there a link to a public website for that Sondheim quiz or is it just on Facebook? I'd love to take it.

One of the things that turned me off to Patti many years ago is that her fans seem to hate Bernadette.

This is why I stopped reading (and occasionally posting on) BWW a while back--those people bug the hell out of me and have nothing to say that I'm interested in hearing. Same thing with ATC. One day I just asked myself "Why are you tormenting yourself over these message boards? It's not like Broadway is your life or anything." I used to think I would feel out-of-it if I didn't keep tabs. But I quickly discovered that I didn't miss it at all.

Oops, I just realized that I might sound like I was insulting you, Jessica. I didn't mean it that way at all. I thought your comments on that thread were very well thought out & expressed and eminently sensible.

Totally agree about the Broadway boards. I used to be a big-time poster on BWW. I too thought I would miss it, but I really don't. I still go to the website to check out news items and photos; but I don't miss the drama of their message boards at all.

It's a shame that people on there, or some fans in general, feel the need to hate-target one person because they like someone else so much more and could not possibly like both.
ie:I for one don't understand some peoples' obsessions with Laura Bell Bundy. However, I don't HATE LBB just because I like Kristin Chenoweth.

With Patti and Bernadette, I enjoy them both so much that it surprises me to see people categorized as either Bernadette fans or Patti fans. I feel like a child with parents in the middle of a divorce all over again. lol
