Great show, misguided production.

This was the weakest year for original musicals in a long time. None of them were worthy, in my opinion. It would be my choice to just suspend a category in any year with no worthy contenders, but the Tonys are about business, not art.

| posted: 6/15/2008 at 11:06:42 PM ET I'm not necessarily surprised, but I don't think the award was deserved, as evidenced by her performance tonight. I felt no emotion in "Everything's Coming Up Roses." It was a big display of 'listen how loud I can sing' and 'watch how I can pretend to act'. I saw her on Good Morning America and The View as well, and was totally unconvinced. It's like she blows through the performance like a freight train, which, arguably, can be a character choice for Mama Rose because in many ways, the character is like a train barreling over everyone and everything in her path. But, behind that train has to be some emotion and humanity, which I haven't seen in any of her Rose performances.
Yes, her speech was very nice. But I still don't agree with the decision to give her the Tony, and this makes me even more than the 100% sure I already am that Bernadette was utterly and completely robbed.

I saw both shows-- Patti and Bernadette(twice)-- and I have to say... While I love Bernadette, I think Patti owns this role. She really deserved to win. Bernadette (and you all will hate me for this) but she missed too many shows. It got to be a joke.
