Nicole Kidman has at least been in a play. Tony Bennett and Mary J. Blige, while both very talented, have not. I don't really like how the Tonys are trying to make the show more commercial and pop for non-Broadway fans.

OK, so the Tonys has a limited audience. Face it, it won't be a big moneymaker. With all the shlock on broadcast TV, why can't theater fans have one show once a year that really highlights Broadway performers (who are the world's most talented, IMHO, and they give the most articulate and witty acceptance speeches). And isn't that a novel idea?!? It also bothers me that the production numbers get shorter every year.
Perhaps CBS (or whatever network is showing it) should either hang it up (it would do well on Bravo or A&E, I would think). What does all that really cost them, anyway?? They don't have to pay the actors, performers, do they?? There must be advertisers interested in selling to this audience??

From: Maryland | posted: 5/27/2004 at 12:30:16 PM ET I understand that they do it for ratings, but it rubs me the wrong way. Especially since it's ONLY those people plus other well-knowns like Hugh Jackman and P. Diddy being announced in commercials. I really expected Bernadette to be listed on the tv spots, because she is very well known and respected.
I agree that CBS should either accept that the Tonys aren't going to bring in ratings like the superbowl or just not air it. Why not let PBS air it since they air the first part of the show?

From: northern VA | posted: 5/27/2004 at 2:28:58 PM ET If the telecast was moved to PBS,the burden of carrying the show would fall on individual stations. Some stations may feel that there wouldn't be enough interest in their area to warrant buying the telecast. Some states only have two PBS stations (Hawaii only has one)-if that station decides not to air the telecast, then that's a significant amount of people left out. As much as I am confident that my local station would pick up the telecast,I'd hate for anyone else to be at the mercy of their local PBS station. Some PBS stations did not air the Broadway's Lost Treasures documentary.
I think the entire telecast is shown on CBS this year (3 hours).
As for Bravo-not everyone subscribes to cable. And some cable companies make Bravo a "pay for" station.
As much as I dislike the CBS telecast and hate that they don't let closed shows perform,at least everyone who wants to see it has the chance to see it. And it's the only network which picks it up every year-if it would drop it,there's no guarantee that the other Big Three networks would pick it up.

From: Bradenton/Sarasota, FLA | posted: 5/27/2004 at 2:44:39 PM ET Good points all.
Let me try to say what I mean a little better:
What's wrong with playing to the audience that is truly interested in the show, doing that really well, give them what they are hungry for, and not try so desperately to draw in others with little or no interest in theater by adding people like Blige? Isn't Broadway full of great, great voices to sing Broadway medleys??
Fursure, it's great that CBS still does carry it (and the split show with PBS was a one-time-only experiment).
Thank you, and goodnight.

From: northern VA | posted: 5/27/2004 at 2:57:49 PM ET SingOutAnnie-there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. I agree 100%.
I don't understand the mentality that bringing in Nicole Kidman (yes, she's done theater, and I like her very much. But if I want to see her,all I have to do is turn on E! or read People,US,etc. It's not like she or any of these people are Greta Garbo.) to present Best Scenic Design or whatever will draw in viewers otherwise uninterested. I do wish that CBS would not try to pander to the lowest common denominator and recognize that there is a limited audience for this show, but one which is very appealing to advertisers. I feel sorry for the ATW,for they may feel that if they stood up to CBS,the network may drop the telecast all together. I do think it's not fair that there are dozens of music, movies, television, and video awards shown every year and do not feel threatened by time limits, and theater only gets one-limited to Broadway, and heavy on musicals-and the community is made to feel grateful for the small crumbs that are thrown. I feel this *every* year when it's almost midnight and the Oscars are still droning on,with the lame jokes, shticks, choreographed routines by Debbie Allen (thankfully gone last year),and whatnot that happens time and time again. And network execs live and die by ratings,I understand. It's a cutthroat business, especially for the Big Three (and Fox),since so many subscribe to cable, and the pay networks (HBO and company) have luxuries and freedoms that they do not have. I know all this. I think the majority of people know this, and understand this. That doesn't mean I have to like it. But I do accept it.
Believe me,I'm on the side of everyone who complains about the telecast. I have contacted CBS asking them to reconsider their ruling on closed shows. I don't expect anything to change when I do it,but it makes me feel a little better. I am happy that they are showing taped excerpts from the nominated plays. But I don't see the other networks fighting over this like they do when a network's monopoly on the Super Bowl or the Olympics runs out. And that's a shame,to say the least. And for the long haul,CBS is it. And I guess we're supposed to feel grateful.

From: northern VA | posted: 5/27/2004 at 3:27:22 PM ET The solution is simple. Someone here has to become president of CBS. Then, all these problems will be solved. Give a lot of lip about how it's not always about the ratings, and pray that the other networks don't decide to air the finale of some reality television show. I mean, how long can this reality craze last? Anyone?
But yay for Bernadette at the Tonys! Sorry to get off-topic.
Jenn, who does like The Amazing Race,so I'm not totally against reality shows.

From: Bradenton/Sarasota, FLA | posted: 5/27/2004 at 3:35:40 PM ET PBS is my refuge, my strength -- as it were.
No cut on PBS was intended. It was the split show thingy. I thought they did it for two years, actually, and seems like there was overlap or some such. Whatever, I thought it was messy.
Perhaps we should take a positive note and think of all who will NOT be presenting or singing. No JLo or Britney.
(I don't quite loathe her, but I do intend to boo loudly at the tube when Marissa comes out. BP was robbed!!! Sorry. Some old wounds never heal. )
