I can hardly believe it, but it appears to be true that this amazing performer is a Scientologist. A sad day for this European fan.

Not to pass judgement on any religious group, but it has been reported that Bernadette perhaps was a scientologist in the 70s or at least explored the religion but that she hasn't been a member for many decades.

Unlike more tactful people here, I'm perfectly willing to pass judgement on any number of groups, religious or other. Scientology is hideous.
I don't care what internet lists of supposed scientologists Bernadette's name is shoehorned into. Where's the evidence? She's never said she was, and no one has ever shown any proof.

Wikipedia, usually quite reliable, does mention her membership. Well, I do hope that it isn't true, because it is a hideous cult indeed, which I'm glad to say is forbidden by law in my country.

See our old thread--there is absolutley no evidence that Bernadette is or ever was a practicing Scientologist.
let's solve this ridiculous assertion by asking for a change to the wiki.. write-up, is that possible?

Wikipedia has been the center of a number of controversies concerning the planting of malicious misinformation. They've since put more safeguards in place. Earlier versions of the biographical entry on Bernadette contained some other false information and unconfirmed rumors. Fortunately, they've since been deleted.
I actually think Wikipedia is a great resource and I use it all the time, but you have to exercise caution and skepticism when reading it.

I don't care what religion someone practices, so long as it is not unwillingly forced upon others and does not teach hate.

Wikipedia doesn't actually say that she is a Scientologist but refers to another site, which is merely a listing of Scientologists. Why would anyone believe that listing with no supporting evidence? (That link is no longer present. )
Why not give someone the benefit of the doubt? Especially in light of other factual statements and actions, which I pointed out in my previous post of 11/11/05.
(Generally speaking I agree 100% with Christine. Keep your beliefs to yourself and go about your business, I says!)

Except that scientology isn't a legitimate "alternative" religion. It's a cult plain and simple, operated as a money-making scheme, and employing brainwashing, extortion, and threats against members and their families. There is no defense for it.

I didn’t know the topic had been discussed before. My apologies for bringing it up again and thanks to everyone for helping me out. The mention of one of my favourite vocalists as a Scientologist came as quite a shock. It found it so utterly incompatible with her persona and style. I’ll sort of assume that your assumptions that she isn’t one are correct.
But no, it is not just another innocent religion. There are plenty of reasons why this organisation is not allowed in several European countries. The main one is that, as Karen pointed out, it is a cult, which isn’t driven by sincere spirituality, but by the very opposite, the hunger for money and power.

Yes but The United States was founded on the principle of religious freedom (though lately that is sometimes hard for some to remember) and until this religion/cult does something illegal, it can continue to operate in this country. I fully admit I know very little about Scientology and mostly just the little I hear from celebrities who are members therefore I try to not pass judgement on anything that I am not an expert. Remember there was a time when Christians and Jews (and I'm sure just about every other major world religion) were thought to be wrong. I agree with Christine, as long as they leave me to my choice of religion and don't teach hate, I'm not going to condone them.

Actually, it probably does engage in illegal activity, i.e. money laundering, etc.
It needs to be thoroughly investigated and although I don't propose it be banned from operating in the U.S., at the very least its tax-exempt status as a religion should be permanently revoked. How that status was ever obtained, after decades of being ruled a for-profit business, is probably a fascinating and enraging story in itself.

I didn't mean my statement to be read as an endorsement of Scientology--sorry if that was the interpretation.
I do defend the various American "Freedoms", however, speech, religion, and so forth, otherwise we might as well be in Myramar or Libya, well you get the idea.
(And let's save the discussion of grabbing power/money/squelching opposition for another place, otherwise we'd have to start with, oh I don't know, Henry V and the Crusades and organized religion and...uh oh, what did I just step in.)
