Still, I doubt they were separated at birth...

This may wind up like that "six degrees of separation" game again, but thinking of Tommy Tune got me to watch "Hello, Dolly." Among the credits, I spotted, for "Dance Arrangements," one Marvin Laird.

From: Bradenton/Sarasota, FLA | posted: 3/7/2004 at 11:58:07 AM ET Ah-hah. And that was, it appears, the year Tyne won for Gypsy.
OK, so maybe not the crotch. But a wayward elbow from Tune could have put an eye out or busted that cute Peters' nose.
Hmmm. As I have had a good bit of fun at the expense of Bernadette's height, or lack thereof, (oops, there I go again), I feel compelled to reiterate that I ADORE this woman. And in Act 2 of "Into the Woods," when she's in heels and hair, and that deep purple dress and red cape, she is absolutely, positively STUNNING!! She's almost painfully beautiful in some scenes.
Too, if I'd not seen her outside the Shubert, I would not have thought her all that short. Again, it's the wondrous illusion of the theater. When I saw "Gypsy" the first time last June and waited to see her in Shubert Alley, I was really taken aback at how petite she was in "real life," because on stage she did not look so tiny. Neither could I figure out how she got all that lovely hair under the Mama Rose wig.
(Nor how the witch transforms?? Or how she got into that Bob Mackie dress she wears in the first act of her London concert? Moreover, how she STAYS IN the Bob Mackie dress she wears in the first act of her concert??)
It's a mystery and it's magical!!
Leave no doubt – Bernadette's talent is GIGANTIC!! She is the best.

You are hilarious! I was laughing out loud reading your last post. I too, am totally bewildered as to how the woman stays in the Bob Mackie dress she wears in the first act of her London concert....wowsers! It certainly is a mystery. And I've always wondered how the witch transorms in ITW, now this to me is without a doubt the biggest mystery of all.....

From: northern VA | posted: 3/7/2004 at 3:38:45 PM ET There's a great interview on the sondheim.com website-she won't tell how the transformation takes place. I'm sure many of you know about the site, but reposting just in case:

| posted: 3/7/2004 at 4:00:13 PM ET One hint about the transformation. It's not as difficult as you think but if you are trying to figure it out by watching the tape - don't torture yourself. They filmed that in front of an audience and also in an empty theater. The magic of Hollywood camera tricks were used. I've heard the transformation explained many times so I'll share if anyone is interested. But I don't want to spoil it if you prefer it to remain a mystery.
And SingOutAnnie, you are cracking me up as well. I believe many of your questions - particularly regarding that dress - will remain a mystery.

From Internet Network: 141.153.165.x | posted: 3/7/2004 at 6:05:04 PM ET I didn't see Into the Woods live on Broadway, but I've seen pictures of Bernadette as the old witch, and I don't think she wore as much on her face every night as she does in the video. I think she just wore a nose a chin and a few other small details. In the video she has her full face covered. Does anybody know if I'm right?

From: Bradenton/Sarasota, FLA | posted: 3/7/2004 at 8:10:05 PM ET Hearing the hints about the transformation, I think I'd like to keep it a mystery too. And as I'm convinced the Mackie dress has no zipper, I'll just go on believing she was poured into it, or else it too was a transformation...
That Sondheim interview is just great. It is so insightful. (Hey, boys. She's got brains too!!)
Speaking of Sondheim, I don't think I've seen it mentioned here yet, but the Sweeney Todd DVD is due out April 20.
Also, Bernadette's "Inside the Actor's Studio" interview is due to air March 31 on Bravo. But at 6 a.m., so set your VCRs. I've only heard the audio of that, so I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

You have to love to love that quote. "You can't just bop through this"

| posted: 3/8/2004 at 11:00:49 AM ET Oh definitely anyone who has not seen this yet, HAS to watch it. Despite having to deal with James Lipton's usual pompous self, the interview is great. Just the segment with her tap dancing is great but there is so much more. And I love the look on Michael's face when she says the curse word that she says when she is REALLY mad. LOL
