Hey Guys...It has been announced the Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick have signed on to make a movie musical version of the Producers...It also mentions Phantom of the Opera's release, and how Hairspray and Wicked are in development! How cool is that? I just hope they don't destroy the shows! Here is the linkMovie Musicals !

I wonder who they'll get to play Elphie and Glinda in Wicked... I hope it's Kristin and Idina, but I doubt it.

I read in Show People magazine that when they originally thought of this show they pictured Demi Moore as Elphie and Melanie Griffith as Galinda...but I hope it's Kristin and Idina in the movie.

OH man....no offense....it better not be Demi and Melanie...does Demi even sing??? I think they most likely will get Idina and Cheno to do it...i hope so at least! I don't think there are many people out there that could do what they do...we'll see though

Well, this is interesting. Have there been movie musicals of musicals that were based on movies?

I'm trying to think, but can't come up with any. Being that musicals of movies have never really been a big force until now,I would be surprised if there are any.

I really don't know what to think about this, since I was pleasantly surprised by Chicago.

Jenn:
"I Am A Camera" (movie-non-muscial), 1955="Cabaret" (stage), 1966="Cabaret" (movie), 1972

There are probably others but this is a classic!

Jean-
But "I Am A Camera" was based on Isherwood's Berlin Stories, and then turned into a play, then a movie, then a stage musical, then a movie musical-I'm thinking of something that was originally made for a movie (an original story),then made into a musical, then the musical was adapted for film. My first post was unclear-sorry! I didn't specify that I was thinking of an original movie storyline as the original source. Is that clear as mud?

For example,The Phantom of the Opera doesn't count, because that was from a novel, which has been filmed several times, was adapted as a stage play before ALW's musical (and maybe before the first film-I don't know),then turned into the ALW musical, and now will be filmed.

However,a movie such as Hairspray-originally made for film, was made into a stage musical, and will-apparently-be made into a movie musical.

And let's not even consider the possibility of the stage version of Thoroughly Modern Millie being filmed. That's a whole 'nother ballpark (movie musical adapted for the stage then stage version filmed).

Jean-

Perhaps A Little Night Music (from Smiles of a Summer Night)? Wasn't A Little Night Music made into a movie (I've never seen it)?

A Little Night Music is a good example; another one might be Sweet Charity which was loosely adapted from the Fellini film Nights of Cabiria and was successful enough on stage to inspire a film version with Shirley Maclaine. As you mention, in the past stage musicals that were not completely original were usually based on books or plays, but in our increasingly post-literate age, we're probably going to see a lot more based on movies and even televison shows(sigh). Whether many of these stage shows will then get filmed will depend upon the box-office of whatever movie musical comes up next. Chicago may have started a new trend, or it may turn out to be just a flukish anomaly.

Hello, Dolly! was a stage musical starring Carol Channing that was adapted from a non-musical movie (The Matchmaker), and then made into a movie musical starring Barbra Streisand.

lol I don't know if that has anything to do with what you're talking about?

Christine-I think The Matchmaker was a play before it was a film. Thornton Wilder,I believe. Sheesh! I feel bad saying "no" to people who are trying to help-you all are just playing along!

Would you believe I've never watched the film version of Hello Dolly? But I'm sure you have.

The things you learn-I didn't know Sweet Charity was adapted from a film. Thanks,Karen! That's what so nice about this board-a good, smart group. I bought the remastered CD not too long ago-a fun listen.

Maybe it's just because my parents saw Sweet Charity on Broadway with Gwen Verdon, and I grew up listening to the cast album(a lot), but I've always adored that score. It doesn't get a lot of critical respect, but darn it, I still think it's great. LOL! Also, the film version caught a lot of flak for some reason but imho it's one of the best of the Broadway to Hollywood transfers.Younger people on the board, if you're not familiar with the film or the OCR, try giving them a look/listen.

Actually, just to clarify, WICKED's not technically in development yet. And, from what I understand, if it ever does go into development, it would be as a non-musical movie. Which I suppose frees up casting choices for the usual suspects (Melanie Griffith? Ugh. Besides being a bit too old, her acting is, uhh... oh, I'll not say it. My mother always said, "if you have nothing nice to say...")

Q: Any funny incidents or accidents with Kristin (Chenoweth)?

Norbert Leo Butz: I have this Errol Flynn moment where I swing in on this rope. One night in San Francisco, I let go of the rope and the rest of the actors started cracking up. I turned around and the rope had literally tied around Kristin's head and got caught on her crown and was pulling her off stage. It was like watching Barbie get hung.
