And, from what I understand, if it ever does go into development, it would be as a non-musical movie. Which I suppose frees up casting choices for the usual suspects (Melanie Griffith? Ugh. Besides being a bit too old, her acting is, uhh... oh, I'll not say it. My mother always said, "if you have nothing nice to say...")

Q: Any funny incidents or accidents with Kristin (Chenoweth)?
Norbert Leo Butz: I have this Errol Flynn moment where I swing in on this rope. One night in San Francisco, I let go of the rope and the rest of the actors started cracking up. I turned around and the rope had literally tied around Kristin's head and got caught on her crown and was pulling her off stage. It was like watching Barbie get hung.

Melanie can't act, can't sing, can't dance. There, I'm done. Though I would like to see the movie as a musical rather than a drama.

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 1/8/2004 at 9:27:05 AM ET I never saw Steel Magnolias so I don't know if this was alluded to, but that line was originated in real life by Alice Roosevelt Longworth, the daughter of TR, who was a leading Washington hostess for many decades throughout the twentieth century. She was famed for her wit and her love of gossip. Late in her long life, she had that embroidered on a pillow which she kept prominently displayed at her parties.

From: Alabama | posted: 1/8/2004 at 1:52:35 PM ET Well the Goodbye Girl was a movie first, and then It became a musical with Bernadette(duh) but now they are remaking the movie version for television. Sigh...I wish they would have adapted the musical version for tv.

| posted: 1/8/2004 at 2:42:31 PM ET Well I think the general concensus was that the musical version of The Goodbye Girl did not work so its probably a good idea they are remaking the film instead.
In fact, in the ads for this TV Movie it makes no mention that it was once a musical as well.

From: Brooklyn, NY | posted: 1/8/2004 at 3:00:49 PM ET I think Bernadette Peters was at her best (vocally) on the Goodbye Girl CD. I think she sounds better on that recording than any other (although I listen to GYPSY more than anything, because it's her best OVERALL), and the score is perfect for her. I love love love it!

You are absolutely right Karen. I couldn't remember who had originally said it...I knew it was one of the Roosevelt women. In Steel Magnolias Clary (played by Olympia) does give Ms. Roosevelt credit for the line. In fact she quotes Roosevelt the same way I quoted her as saying it.

From: northern VA | posted: 1/8/2004 at 4:39:06 PM ET Christine-you crack me up with how much you like Steel Magnolias. You know, that was actually filmed in Natchitcohes,La. Now you've got me wanting to rent it-it's been so long since I've seen it. I just wish that they would have done better with the accents, but hey-it's not a documentary.
As for the Wicked film-I'm guessing that the movie will be based on the novel (more or less)....
Re:The Goodbye Girl-I have a feeling that there were several things going against the musical: clashes of personalities and perhaps material that wasn't very amendable for musicalization.
Although I do enjoy the recording-nice ballads and good chemistry between Bernadette and Martin Short. It's a good story.
I had it on tape, and I think it's out of print. I need to find a used CD from half.com or somewhere.
EDIT: I love the Tony website. It has a great archive. Talk of The Goodbye Girl made me curious about its competition that year (1993)-Kiss of the Spider Woman,Blood Brothers, and The Who's Tommy. My Favorite Year was also in that season (but wasn't up for Best Musical). So-a pretty dramatic/melodramatic season as far as musicals go,and another musical comedy adapted from a movie.
It would be interesting to speculate how The Goodbye Girl would have been received if it had been in a different season. Perhaps in a less heavily dramatic season for musicals,or one dominated by non-American musicals, etc. Kiss of the Spider Woman won seven Tonys that year (did I tell you how much I love the Tony website?). Big epic stories for musicals that year, and The Goodbye Girl was a cute story with two great leads, and My Favorite Year was the other musical comedy,I guess (with a great opening number-that's such a great song).

From: Alabama | posted: 1/8/2004 at 5:18:02 PM ET I love the Goodbye Girl musical. It's hard for me to see sometimes why things aren't recieved well, but then again I never understood why anyone could say that Bernadette was miscast as Mama Rose. Sigh.

From: Toronto | posted: 1/8/2004 at 6:41:25 PM ET I just thought I would add, (since I don't feel like doing my homework yet), that I LOVED The Goodbye Girl! The music, the story, the cast, all of it spoke to me! I think any kid, (I was a kid then!) who has issues with parents, dads, moms, broken homes, could relate to this musical. Every time I hear Martin Short's I Think I Can Play This Part (the song he sings to the little girl), I totally start to cry!! Yes......because I'm a big dork!
You either got it, or you aint!
