I haven't been to this board for a while, and may be asking a question that has already been answered. I had read that Bernadette was committed to Gypsy until March 13. Tickets for the show are now on sale through June, does this mean Bernadette has agreed to stay on, or will someone replace her? I'm not asking for speculation, does anyone know
for certain? Thanks!!!

No one knows for certain - in other words it has not been OFFICIALLY announced. However, John Dossett signed on to stay until September and there has been a great deal of speculation that Bernadette will probably be doing the same. I can't remember if I read it on this board or another theater board but someone posted that they knew someone in the production and that they had heard that Bernadette was definitely staying.

So I would say it is highly likely but not official yet.

I started wondering because I just received a "special offer" from the Gypsy website, that is valid through March 13th. This has me thinking that maybe someone else might be playing Rose after that date.

No I think March 13th is probably more the end of the slow winter time when sales might pick up again and therefore a discount may not be available.

Is there any unwritten rule of thumb on the timeframe in which performer extensions or performer departures are announced?

I don't know anything about theatre business --- so I may be really off on this ---but I would think that if a performer, particularly of Bernadette's calibur, was leaving in the next three or four months, it would be announced now so to maximize ticket sales and attendance.

I think this is usually about the time frame. And of course after she actually decides to stay, there are negotiations and other legal stuff that might take some time. Maybe everyone knows she is staying but the lawyers are ironing out all the details so they can't officially announce it yet. I would gather if she had made up her mind to NOT stay that they would also be announcing it so maybe that is a good indication that she is staying.

Telecharge is selling to tickets through June 26, 2004, and is advertising that the show stars BERNADETTE PETERS. This is a clear and reliable indication that she will be in the show until then. I doubt that they would have put the new block of tickets on sale if there were the chance that Bernadette would not be remaining in the show. I don't see any need to worry that she will not be in the show then. After all, there was never ANY official announcement from any official production source that she was leaving in March...there were reports that she was contracted for a year, but nowhere in any advertising for the show, or through the publicist for the show, or through Telecharge, was it ever announced that she was only going to be in the show until March. People just assumed this because the tickets were only on sale until March 13, 2004, and there were mentions that she had a "yearlong" contract. This is pretty standard. If she were leaving in March, which is only weeks away at this point, it would likely have already be announced.

Actually I think it is done all the time. The name of the show is pretty much, "Bernadette Peters in Gypsy". Not officially but that is what it is always billed as. Ticket sales get extended all the time. So it is no guarantee that she will still be with the show. If that was all settled, it would have definitely been announced by now. They wouldn't sit on that announcement. While I still feel she will probably stay with the show, the producers have every to right bring some else in. Of course, I think then you can get your money back if you bought tickets to see her and you don't like her replacement.

Also, I think some folks here reported that they thought her year was up as of May 1st so maybe the whole "will she extend" thing just hasn't been resolved yet.
