I saw the show the weekend of the final performance of Gypsy and was looking forward to catching it one last time before it closed, but I guess that is no longer possible.

Other shows, with more mixed reviews, and Tony shut-outs, are limping along in the 50 and 60 percentiles, and yet still staying open. I mean, I'm glad they can do it, but what happened to Assassins? Yes, I agree, it's upsetting.

Registered: 8/14/2003 | posted: 6/29/2004 at 11:10:37 PM ET It seems like shows are closing with less and less warning...The Normal Heart posted a closing notice today that tonight will be the last performance and I think it was supposed to run through September.

From: tonawanda,n.y. | posted: 6/29/2004 at 11:49:41 PM ET Yes, I am upset that good shows are closing! There must be other reasons than just "advance sales" for "Assassins" closing so early! The gross sales are very good...seems they are not waiting for the tourists to arrive in the summer.Heck, I'm still disturbed about "Gypsy" closing before the fall, and the gross sales were pretty good in the last weeks! Do you suppose our culture is changing and people would rather see movies like "White Chicks"? God save us all!

I had tickets for September too. So does anyone have any suggestios about what I should see instead. And I was seeing Assassins instead of Gypsy.

"Our culture" already has changed. Look at television and the movies and music; most of TV (think all the "reality" shows) isn't worth the time and most movies are aimed at the 12-year-old male mind (and hormones). You really have to hunt and pick and choose to find quality product.
Theater, I found, to be the last bastion of really talented performers, and not just the stars, where you don't make it with just a pretty face and ability to lipsync or be dubbed five times over until it sounds like singing. But I think "the market" and drive for BIG bucks is sludging into theater as well.
We have to demand better.

From: NYC | posted: 7/14/2004 at 9:57:42 AM ET Fortunately I saw it last night. WOW! It is such a shame that it is closing. It really is so interesting, funny, touching...I thought the entire cast - even the "crowd" was fantastic. Meanwhile "pop" theater continues to thrive - SingOutAnnie is so right.

From: Rhode Island | posted: 7/14/2004 at 12:17:04 PM ET I went to see Assasins Saturday after Broadway Barks and thought it was great. The two main women in it are hilarious and play off each other so well. It's a shame it's closing so soon - highly recommend trying to catch it before it closes if you can!
