Well I went to the opening of Dance of the Vampires last night, and I have to say I do not recommend this show. Good things first: The sets, lighting, costumes, make-up, etc. were fantastic. The set was particularly amazing but the story itself was fairly empty and the entire production was filled with very cheesy jokes. The first couple were funny but after about 5 minutes of them it was like watching a poorly written TV sitcom. The actors gave full out performances and all were in excellent voice. Unfortunatley the material was not worthy of their talents. Just thought I would share my thoughts. Has anyone else seen it?

That's a shame. I hate to see good talent utilized by a poor script. I may still go and see it anyway...I don't like to judge until I've seen it first hand.

You may want to hurry to the Minskoff. It was universally panned by the critics so it may not be around for long.

I haven't seen the show yet so I can't really comment on how good or bad it is. I have heard some songs from the demo though and really liked those.
I learned a long time ago to NOT listen to any of the critics reviews!! Nothing makes their opinion better than anyone else's ( other than the fact that they get paid to share theirs LOL). They completely panned Jane Eyre, which I LOVED. Many of them didn't like Jekyll & Hyde either and that's one of my fave shows! Even Bernadette doesn't always get the kindest of reviews. So I try not to listen to reviews. You can't judge a show before you even see it so why let someone else's opinions influence yours?Unfortunately, many people do plan their shows on what the reviews are like. Many times reviews shape a show's fate. I do hope to see the show soon though. I've heard it might not last long(although their tickets sold pretty well up until March!) and a friend is covering for Michael Crawford so I definitely want to see it! I think a lot of the people going to see this show also expect to see Michael, "The Phantom" singing these beautiful ballads not realizing this show has a lot of rock/pop influences. The Minskoff is a wonderful theatre so I'm happy it's being used again!

I saw the show about a month ago in previews. I loved the set and the special effects. I loved all their voices. But I have to agree with Moljul, the jokes were funny but I just think Michael Crawford is better in classic musicals like Phantom of the Opera.

I agree you shouldn't let critics decide what you should see. I knew the show was getting a lot of mixed reviews but I tried not to read them so I had an open mind last night. But now that I have seen it, I can formulate my opinion. But I do pay attention somewhat to what others say. There are so many shows to see and they are so expensive, you have to weed some of them out so taking the advice of someone you trust (which probably isn't a critic LOL) and who's taste you share is a good way to go.

The advance for the show is quite large but I've heard it is a lot of group sales that can cancel based on reviews. There is a chance that a lot of people will still go to it despite the reviews just to see Michael Crawford back on Broadway. We'll have to wait and see how it weathers the reviews.
