Oh my gosh! Did anyone go to Gypsy of the Year or hear about it? There's this hilarious picture of Seth Rudetsky in drag as Fran Weissler. I heard there was a Gypsy revival mention/joke in Urintown's skit and a Bernadette mention in Millie's skit. I also heard that Carol Burnett was introduced from the audience. They raised a record-breaking 375,655 for BCEFA this year!

About that amount of money raised:

"A whopping amount of money was raised for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS in the last six weeks. A grand total of $2,623,825 (which tops last year's figure by $585,903) was announced today at The 14th Annual Gypsy of the Year Competition. Broadway, off-Broadway and touring shows participated in the fundraising efforts."

Sutton Foster read a poem while the cast of Millie sang a song as backup (sorry I can't remember the song). The poem was about all the famous people who had used Sutton's dressing room toilet before her. Bernadette, Julie Andrews, etc. I didn't go but I can't wait to get the tapes when they are available.

I wonder if Sutton realizes how LUCKY she is to get that dressing room. Its really one of the nicest ones on Broadway! I'm sure Marc(Kudisch) must realize how lucky he is...compared to his dressing room and the backstage at the Plymouth the Marquis must be like Heaven! Not only do Sutton and Marc get their own toilet( which is what the poem was about) but they get their own shower....somewhat of a rarity. OK, more info. then you all neeeded to know I guess...LOL!

Yes, that dressing room is a mansion compared to most Broadway house dressing rooms. I always feel bad for the stars of Cabaret - their dressing rooms are on the very top floor. Now I think it is only 4 or 5 stories up but the stairs leading to them are steep. Apparently they are the nicest dressing rooms but still - that is a long hike if you forget something. :-)

At first I was well...not too happy with Gypsy going into the Shubert because I love the Marquis and have so many great memories from there and still have friends who work there. But then I started thinking...the stage at the Marquis is pretty big for a show like Gypsy. Plus the Shubert has SO much history to it and has that Gypsy sort of ambiance! The backstage at the Shubert might not be as spacious ( those stairs can be lethal!) and some of the theater's sight lines aren't too great. Whereas there really wasn't a bad seat at the Marquis. But other than that the Shubert is really nice. LOL
