From: northern VA | posted: 10/30/2004 at 11:41:28 AM ET Gather 'round,ya'll,for another lengthy post from yours truly...apologies to those for whom this is already known...
Canada has won the World Series twice (Toronto Blue Jays, and had one of the highest scoring playoff games in the history of the Series. Canada also has the Montreal Expos in the League until next year, when the Expos will probably go to D.C. The Expos have had serious financial troubles, but some in D.C. are opposed to moving the team there.). The World Series is limited to North American teams in the National League and the American League.
The MLB is not ignorant of the misnomer and has been heavily involved in the creation of the Baseball World Cup,which will debut next spring,if all goes according to plan (but some are concerned that it may take another year). The MLB really wants it to happen, since they don't like the fact that baseball has not become as popular internationally as it would like (especially compared to basketball). They're hoping this will spur interest and pride in national teams.
Interestingly,27% of MLB players are not from the United States(minor leagues is even more-46% or 47%). So if the World Cup is popular and does boost national teams, the percentage could be affected, since players may want to play for their native country rather than in the United States. However, interest in baseball has decreased even in the United States,so who knows. It's not really "America's national pastime" so much anymore (unfortunately,IMO. I'd rather baseball than American football or basketball).
There will only be 16 teams that will probably compete in the World Cup-soccer and basketball are much more international. However,Japan is particularly obsessed with baseball. Puerto Rico has an excellent team. Korea is quite good. As for Europe-baseball has never caught on like basketball(which has gone off like fireworks, and could eclipse soccer's popularity,to the consternation of soccer officials).
Jenn, who rooted for the Astros. Oh,well.

I just feel very anti-American these days, so any little dig I can get in is satisfying.

From: Bradenton/Sarasota, FLA | posted: 10/31/2004 at 1:28:18 PM ET jmslsu01, is that another example of "blame Canada"??
Karen, are you feeling "anti-American" or anti-Bush (Cheney, Ashcroft, Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, DeLay, etc.) and the direction of the neo-cons have been taking America over the last nearly four years?? Don't confuse the two. Cheney said publicly if you don't agree with this administration (about going into Iraq), you are not a patriot. AINT TRUE!! He's the anti-American -- he does not believe in the Constitution or the Bill of Rights.
I know the feeling tho...I've voted for president since '72. I've never felt so discouraged about our country and its future.
And from the 2000 election, I learned my vote doesn't really count in the presidential election (since I now live in a predominately Repub state).
It's at fight-or-flight time. Let's start fighting back. Take the first swing -- vote on Tuesday.
I guess this is off topic of the off-topic topic.
[Edit: Sorry if this is too too for a theater site. Feelings are high, and as a banner at the Red Sox parade Saturday said: "Now we just have to wait for the other six signs of the apocalypse."
Vote your heart but vote.]

From: northern VA | posted: 10/31/2004 at 4:26:32 PM ET Hello hutchandsuch-
I heard that some people in D.C. don't want the team to be called the Washington Senators because D.C. doesn't have representation!
Let me ask you-are you an Orioles fan? Some of the Orioles folks (officials more so than fans,I think) are not so happy about the Expos treading near their turf....

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 10/31/2004 at 5:41:15 PM ET Let's just say that I'm in anger and despair politically. Bush and his gang of thugs are so terrible and so extreme--they've made everything worse--yet still they seem to have the support of more than 40% of the electorate. That fact is making me question a lot about this country. It makes me want to scream out "What's wrong with you people, and what does it take to wake you up to reality?"

From: northern VA | posted: 10/31/2004 at 10:48:52 PM ET I look at Electoral Vote Predictor on a frequent basis, and it's a fascinating site. Especially today. However-it's safe to say that Tuesday night will be a very *looong* night...stretching into Wednesday morning....afternoon?....eesh. It's going to be close. Either way.
It all depends on turnout. Let me tell you this-my branch was an early voting place. People were waiting over an hour to vote-and this went on for two weeks. The line went out the door and around the building, and this was the same case at other early voting places (I am in the Houston area). Circulation staff is required to ask all new and renewing patrons if they need a voter's registration card, and they handed out loads of applications without having to ask first, and I personally took many reference questions about voting.
Take something to do when you go vote. You will have to stand in line. The poll workers opened up at 7:00 every day,and at the very beginning of early voting and at the end, people were waiting in line when they showed up at 6:30 to prepare the room. Many states are expecting higher voting turnout than in recent elections. If you know of an elderly, disabled,or even a pregnant woman who finds it difficult or impossible to stand in line, find out or have them find out about curbside voting and other voting accomodations (but for the love of God,don't abuse this. Save this for those who truly need it,and not because you need to get back to work.) The poll workers were able to wheel out machines for people who could not stand in line. I would think that other places have similar accomodations. Just march up to the table-don't waste time by standing in line to ask- where the workers are and ask. You do not need to make prior arrangements.
You do not need to have your voter's registration card with you. Bring your driver's license with you for identification-it will speed things up for you.
God bless the League of Women Voters
More proof of how much they rock
