I'm going to have to see if this article is actually in the current print addition. It seems odd to write this now about a star that has left and a show that is no longer running. He's very positive about Peters and Gypsy, but like so many other articles, this on has a number of mistakes.

It's always nice when someone likes Bernadette or Gypsy, but I have to say this guy has the most bizarre opinions and a vulgar, sort of blow-hard writing style that really grates on me. As you say, why is this only being published now? It seems months out of date. If he really loved Brian Stokes Mitchell so much, why did he wait until the show closed to promote it? Kinda weird. And "kneading her capacious breasts"? Yuck! The term "dirty old man" comes to mind. Just my opinion of course.LOL!

A good commentary on "Gypsy" and why folks should see this classic; I hope it gives the show a boost.

But I too think it odd to run now. Like Corliss didn't have another column this week but found this one in a drawer and said 'just run this.'

I could understand if he ahd gone back recently to see a healthy Bernadette in her full power and glory. But he's still pushing the 'when she was sick.' Weird...

"Her cold may have helped her performance" What the ---? Yeah right. And anyone who uses the words "kewpie-doll" or "Betty Boop" to describe Bernadette (much less both in the same sentence) has a hopelessly cliche-ridden mind and should be drummed out of the ranks of professional writers immediately. Sorry to go on about this, but that article struck me as so hopelessly stupid and badly written that it really got under my skin. Okay, that's it. No more rants.

I actually remember this article being posted on All That Chat (I think) several weeks ago so I don't think they are just running it.

I NEVER thought of Bernadette as being a "kewpie doll" or any of those little, sweet girl images, until the critics reviewed her as such!!.Have they ever listened to her CD's or watched her wonderful Royal Albert concert on video!? She is a spectatcular, versatile and interpretive performer.I am astonished that some people see her as a meek,child-like "woman-girl"! HOW do they listen to her? With what EYES do they SEE? Whatever, she touches my heart in a way NO OTHER performer does! Aren't we fortunate she is in our world?

To the loveliest lady of song!
You will keep on giving me joy forever...

Well I think they base the kewpie doll image on her early work which, I feel, is somewhat accurate. The Jerk anyone? But I agree, she has been far from those roles for many years and I wish they would let it go.
