Here it is...my very own Forbidden Broadway song about Bernadette losing the Tony....my way of venting. To the tune of Broadway Baby by Sondheim...

I'm just a Broadway Diva
Nervous sittin' in my seat
trying not to feel the heat
and win for my show.

Broadway Diva
listenin' to the nominees
Oh, won't you call my name please?
to win for my show

Gee
Look at me
On that marquis
Oh, my name in lights
I'm huge!
How can I lose?
If I do,
there's gonna be a big fight.

Look at that girl,
soon all her talent will fade
Heck, she should have played my maid!
to be in my show

Hey! All you tony voters,
I'm talking to you sirs!
I don't need a lot!
Only what I got!
Plus a few more Tony's and a TV spot!

What is this I hear?
Little fat chick got the gold?
She acts like she's two years old!
What am I to do now?
All the people start to boo now!
Cuz I lost it for my show!

Another point of view:

I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, and I do think the song is cleaver. That said, I don't really find it necessary to disparage another performer, especially on the basis of physical appearance, to build up Bernadette. This is, of course, my own opinion based on my own perhaps different perception of the world from yours, Broadway Baby17.

But, Bernadette's career is doing just fine, Gypsy is doing quite well at the box office, and, I suspect, she is respected for her very professional handling of this entire situation. A lesson in class for us all.

PLEASE do not take this as criticism-neither intended nor implied.

LOL, cute song...but Marisa IS really great in Hairspray. Of course Bernadette deserved to win, but really, Marisa is a talented girl.

Have any of you guys actually seen Hairspray? If you haven't, then don't pass a judgement on it! It's such a fun show!! Gypsy is in my opinion, about 10 thousand times better, but I can see how it won. It's a novelty, and the art direction, music, and costumes are very different than most things on Broadway right now. Am I the only one who liked this show!?

Well, of course I saw it--the first month it opened. And of course I loved it: great choreography, well-integrated and appropriate music, terrific sets/costumes --taken from Crayola crayons, I believe-- and most importantly a hugely talented cast. (I live in the Maryland suburbs, used to live in Baltimore, and believe me HONS, there are references in Hairspray that only we "Baltimorons" (that's affectionate) get.) I have recommended it to everyone I know down here.

(By the way, I love Harvey F. and would indeed adopt him and take him home, but, oh well...)

J

Note: I say "of course I saw it"; for those of you who don't know me, I see almost every musical, and a fair number of dramatic plays, on Broadway.

I have to admit...after Bernadette lost the Tony I was pretty bitter. I also was feeling very anti-Hairspray. But...just the other day I was in my local bookstore and I saw the book "Hairspray...the Roots" on the shelf. It was great! I looked through it and it brought back all of my fond memories of the show. I saw Hairspray during previews in August 2002 and I just LOVED it. I loved Marissa, Harvey, and the whole crew. I just hate the fact that the Tony race was between Bernadette and Marissa. They are both so great. I wanted Bernadette to win her third Tony so badly that I managed to turn myself against Hairspray! Ha! It really is a great show. I am over the shock of Bernadette losing...and I am VERY happy that Hairspray is enjoying a successful run. It is a very fun show that will put a smile on your face. I also like seeing Broadway get some much deserved and needed attention. Once again...I am rambling...

Speaking of Forbidden Broadway, has anyone seen it lately? I'm dying to know if they've added a Gypsy spoof.

Christine-
There was a Bernadette spoof not too long ago from what I've heard-"miscastblahblahwrongvoiceyadayadayada." "Small Voice" I believe was the title. I remember reading that on the ATC board, and this was when Gypsy first opened. I don't know if it's still there.

Speaking of FB-the 20th anniversary tour is coming to a local university. I'm planning on seeing it-I first learned about FB when I was in high school.

OHH, I think that thread on ATC was in reference to a FB-like song that someone had written; when Bernadette was sick, and it was to the tune of "If Mama Was Married." The lyrics were actually posted here and caused quite a controversy. I could be wrong, but I don't think FB actually did anything at the beginning of Gypsy.

Jenn, you will love the show. It's histerical. Even just listening to the CD's is fun.

Hey! I'm the one who wrote the song and I should have put a disclaimer on it. You guys don't know me personally and don't know what I'm like and should have thought about the lyrics reflecting me. First of all I don't think Bernadette is a DIVA at all. She's too nice and diva's don't have that reputation. I just didn't want to use too many of the same words in the song. I too love hairspray and especially Merissa. I think she's adorable! The only reason I said anything about her weight is because it's mentioned a lot in the show and parts of the plot are sort of centered around it. I would never ever make fun of someone's physical appearance. I myself am only 4"10 and don't have a perfect body either. Plus Bernadette would never ever have this attitude about losing her Tony! We all know this. This is my reaction for her...I am not anti Hairspray or anti Merissa! Just wanted Bernadette to win! Just thought I'd clear a few things up since you guys don't know me personally yet.

PS I would adopt Harvey Firestein as well! I love his personality! Congratulations to him and his hundredth Tony...ok I exaggerated a little!

Ok, BroadwayBaby17-you just showed some class yourself. I appreciate and understand your explanation.

We all were at the very least disappointed that Bernadette didn't get the Tony. Happily the lack of Tony isn't stopping her from giving the performance of her career.

Obviously we all agree that Bernadette is doing incredibly well and so is the show itself but in my opinion... I don't think Marissa is that great at all....
