Here is a cool thing to chat about. What is your favorite Bernadette Peters Broadway role that she did not win a Tony Award for. Mine is MACK & MABEL, the role, Mabel Normand. I think the score, by my favorite composer, Jerry Herman, is beautiful, and Bernadette is perfectly cast. I have seen video footage from it, and believe me, she was AMAZING! It's one of the few CD's I own that I can listen to from Overture all the way to the finale! What about you?

I haven't been able to hear all the scores to all of her roles but I really like the Goodbye Girl cast recording.

I have to say that my choice would be Into The Woods. I still watch the movie a couple of times a month. I think it is hysterical. "SO Big" HAHA.

I haven't really seen all of her work on Broadway, so I don't really know if I can give an honest opinion. I would have to see who was nominated the years she was in shows. But I do love all 3 that were mentioned already. Mack & Mabel is constantly in my cd player.

Well, Into the Woods is one of my favorite musicals. And I thought Bernadette was great in it as the witch.

She should have at least gotten a Best Supporting Actress Tony for ITTW.

I looved her in "Into the Woods" (I didn't get to see it on Broadway, but I have the tape hehe). I haven't seen "The Goodbye Girl", but I have the cast recording and I like that too. No matter what the show is, she (most likely lol) deserved every Tony she was nominated for!

Definately Into the Woods (although if we were counting Gypsy i would say that).

She was so hysterical in ITW and yet she could also turn around and show the heartbreak. I cant believe she did not win anything for that role!

That particular year was a very odd year. The two main shows pitted against each other in the Tony races were Into the Woods and The Phantom of the Opera. Very scattered voting-The Phantom of the Opera won Best Musical, while Into the Woods won Best Score. Into the Woods won one performing Tony-Joanna Gleason in Best Actress in a Musical, while the Phantom actors won for Best Actor (Michael Crawford) and Best Featured Actress (Judy Kaye). Phantom also won for scenic design,lighting,etc-basically sweeping the remaining awards, including Hal Prince for Best Director of a Musical.

If she had been nominated,it would have probably been in the Featured Actress category. Kaye was the favorite to win that year anyway, and her competition were two actresses in a Cabaret revival (Alyson Reid-who played Sally-interestingly enough, when the next Cabaret revival rolled around,Natasha Richardson was entered in the Best Actress category. Regina Resnik was also in Cabaret and also nominated, and an actress from Sarafina! by the name of Leleti Khumalo was also nominated.

The only other actor to even be nominated was Robert Westenberg (Wolf/Cinderella's Prince). Danielle Ferland (Little Red Riding Hood-she got fantastic reviews) and Chip Zien (Baker) weren't nominated, and their roles were more prominent-Zien's in particular-than was the Witch.

While Bernadette did receive good notices, generally,it was thought that her role was too small for an actress of her magnitude and that she was very much underused. She is absent through a lot of the show. Remember, she came very late into the show as a favor to Sondheim, because they had a vacancy.

Also, many critics pounced on Sondheim for ITW,saying that he "sold out" in this show, especially in the "No One is Alone" song, which to them seemed very unSondheim-like. However,if you listen to his explanation of the song in the American Playhouse interview that is usually shown after the show airs on PBS,he explains the song beautifully. They "held back" a lot of awards for ITW-which is breathtakingly hypocritical. He'd been dogged for writing "unaccessible" shows, and when he writes his most audience-friendly show, the critics turned around and slammed him for "selling out." However, they weren't about to give Best Score to Andrew Lloyd Webber, for he's hated for his popularity just as much as Sondheim is hated for his sophistication and intellectualism. They also hated that he had the power to bring Actors Equity to its knees by threatening to cancel the Broadway production of Phantom of the Opera if his then-wife,Sarah Brightman, was not allowed to reprise her role on Broadway. They were going to put up a fuss about Crawford, but he already had some name status, primarily from Barnum and the Hello Dolly! movie. So they allowed Brightman to reprise her role, and if she got a positive review,I must have missed it,and they pointedly did not nominate her for anything. However,I'm not interested in discussing the merits of Sarah Brightman, for I've never seen her perform and I've never listen carefully to her recordings. So I don't want to start a fight-she has very loyal fans, and is reported to be extremely nice to them, and anyone who is nice to their fans and doesn't throw diva temper tantrums is okay by me. And who behaves in a dignified manner when her husband faxes their divorce announcement and announcement of a love affair to the press without her knowledge that he considered the marriage over.

And Sondheim is hated by quite a few critics. Quite a few people are ready to draw blood over Bounce, which suffered through lawsuits, title changes, years of changes and workshops, and I can't think of what else, and they are dying to see Sondheim and Hal Prince lose tremendously. They want to prove that Merrily We Roll Along wasn't a fluke and that these two great, big men should be put out to pasture and never work together again. They want to proclaim that Sondheim has lost his touch and that Prince is no longer a visionary director.

However,IMNSHO,ITW is a far superior score. I'm not an Andrew Lloyd Webber fan by any means, but I don't begrudge his popularity. I liked him plenty years ago,but my interests have changed. He's brought a lot of people into the theater, and that's fine with me. Different strokes for different folks, although there are aspects of Broadway-for which,I believe,he is partly responsible, although he tends to shift blame to everybody but himself-that concern me greatly. But that's another matter.

Anyway-the nominations and wins for that year were very unusual and suspect. You had the feeling that,in some cases, they were not voting for something as much as they were voting against something.

Jenn

My first one is, like most everyone else's... The Witch in INTO THE WOODS! I just hink it's something different... And she obviously kicks butt in that show... My second and third is GYPSY and MACK AND MABEL... Now I haven't seen GYPSY yet but I've seen so much footage, press, and "other" stuff that I think I have a really good feel for her performance... And I think her Mabel is awesome too!

I don't think I have a #1 favorite. I love the DVD for ITW. I saw BP in the Goodbye Girl and LAUGHED SO HARD. I thought it was hysterical. I wish the critics hadn't dismissed the show because BP was a joy in the role. The music was great, but she had a lot of really funny dialogue that displayed her tremendous comedic talents. I also thought she was very funny in Annie Get Your Gun and I loved the way she performed the songs. I like the CD but she really nails the songs live. I can't wait to see Gypsy...on July 3rd! I am a teacher and one of the parents in my room gave me airline passes as a gift (she is also a big BP fan). I am using them to go to NYC to see BP in this fabulous role. Can't wait! By the way---if you catch any of my spelling errors remember that I am on summer break and they don't count!!! J/K I have been visiting this board for a while and I have re-registered (I forgot my previous user name and password) and I am happy to be posting again. THis seems to be a fun group!

Hi, I'm new here, I love Bernadette and my favorite role she played has to be Dot in Sunday in the Park with George, she so should have won the Tony then, as well as this time around.
