FYI: Bernadette was nominated for Sunday in the Park with George in 1984.. According to the Tony Awards website, the nominees for Best Actress in a Musical for that year were Bernadette,Liza Minnelli (The Rink),Rhetta Hughes (Amen Corner-don't ask-I've never heard of it either),and Chita Rivera (The Rink). Chita Rivera won.

If you've never heard of The Rink, don't worry. Major flop.

La Cage Aux Folles swept the awards-including Best Musical and Score. No,I don't understand either. And Jerry Herman's little remark that his win proved that the hummable Broadway musical was alive and well really topped off the night. Thanks,Jer. Way to kick someone when they're down. Although the Tony voters thought Sunday's lighting and scenic design were fine-the only awards Sunday in the Park with George won.

Jenn

It's a shame Sunday didn't pick up many awards, it is a wonderful show. It did however win the Pulitzer Prize that year, being one of the only 7 musicals ever to do so. I'm going to be in a production of Sunday in the fall and I'm very excited, I wish I would have gotten to see it while it was on Broadway. The tape is amazing.

One thing I remember was that Sunday was not really what you would call a success at the time. Many people really didn't understand it or like it because it was so different than anything they had seen before. I think it took a while to catch on and over the years people began to realize what an amazing show it was.

I agree. I think the show had it's own following back then. Many visitors to NY were probably more likely to go to a big name show like La Cage. SITPWG was an acquired taste for many. It is so deep and intellectual. I have loved that show since the first time I watched it about 12 years ago.

I love ITW so I guess u should add me to the many who have already spoken out for that one LOL. (however, I haven't seen the rest of her theatre work. I've only seen Sunday in the Park w/ George, and I've watched her perf. in Hey! Mr. Producer..(also this year & last year's Tony performances))...but yeah, I thought she was wonderful as the witch

Take care,
Stacy

I like Sunday in the Park With George..it was very different as far as Broadway shows go; but I have to really be in the mood to watch it. It's not like I'll be bored and say, "Oh, I think I'll watch that." Ya know. But, I can say that with Into the Woods.
With SITPWG, I have to watch from beginning to end without a break because I become engrossed. ITTW I can just pick and choose my favorite scenes and be happy with just that.
