From: Brooklyn | posted: 5/21/2003 at 10:08:57 AM ET I pulled this from Michael Riedel's Article today inm the NY POST.
"LAST Friday, I reported that Hugh Jackman (who'll soon be swishing around Broadway as Peter Allen) would be asked to host the Tonys but would probably just agree to sing a song and be a presenter.
Well, send me down to Rio - it appears that Tony producer Elizabeth I. McCann managed to persuade him to shoulder hosting responsibilities.
A triumphant McCann, who always threatens to pull my Tony tickets every time I take a swipe at Bernadette Peters, sent me the following note:
"Besides the inaccuracies in your story . . . it was a generally positive piece. You have moved up from the last row in Radio City Musical Hall to the front row of the mezzanine. If you keep up the good work, you might make it into the orchestra by June 8th."
She added: "From now on you will receive one piece of information each week from this office that no one else will receive - whether it is accurate or not."
OK, Liz, can you confirm this?
Bernadette will sing at the Tonys, but not a song from "Gypsy" - she'll do "A Person Can Develop a Cold" from "Guys and Dolls." (Guess I'll be watching the Tonys from my couch!) "
Now he is just being a real jerk.

Registered: 3/10/2001 | posted: 5/21/2003 at 7:06:38 PM ET I think we've all established on the board that we don't have very high opinions of Mr. Reidel on here. That said...why is it such a shock to some of you when he writes one more mean thing about Bernadette?? If you're so against what he says then why even bother reading it let alone typing it all up and posting it on here?? Negativity produces nothing more than negativity...so why not start thinking positively. Trust me, his articles piss me off as well. But he's just looking for attention now I think. I'm pretty positive all of us here are well aware of Bernadette's incredible talents. SHE proved Reidel wrong! She didn't do it by writing some nasty letter to him or by spreading around some mean, heartless rumors...she did it by being her phenomenally talented self. Its his own loss that he apparently is still to blind to see how amazing she is. And is own stupidity that he still has to take shots at her. Reidel is not very well liked among those in this industry. And I'm no just talking about performers. Many take his comments with a grain of salt. At this point he's really only making himself look like a jerk and the one who doesn't know how to do his job. No matter who you are in this business there's always going to be atleast one person who is going to criticize everything you do....that's just how things are. But just remember, as far as Bernadette is concerned...for that one person who doesn't like her work...there are a thousand more who do!

| posted: 5/21/2003 at 7:59:44 PM ET On the contrary, he does his job very well. He is a gossip columnist who has some people thinking he is an entertainment critic or reporter. His column serves no other purpose other than to tantilize and make people talk about him. He has definitely succeeded.

Registered: 3/10/2001 | posted: 5/21/2003 at 8:09:28 PM ET Doing a job well done and manipulating people are two completely different things. Unless, it was written in his contract to write false and hurtful information than no, I do not think he is doing his job well at all. He may be succeeding at whatever it is he wants to accomplish( which may just be writing horrible things about a well known, well respected theatre performer) but that certainly doesn't mean he is good. And I don't even think he is succeeding very well in getting others to believe what he writes. I have not talked to one person that has read his articles that actually agreed with what he has written. Infact, I've only heard about how much people dislike him and do NOT agree with what he writes.

| posted: 5/21/2003 at 8:28:01 PM ET Once again, that is the point of a gossip columnist. To spread gossip not the truth. He's not trying to win a popularity contest. He is trying to get people talking about him and his column. Goal achieved. And if people realize it, they won't take him so seriously or be as hurt by the things he says. Like Bernadette said, "He is just doing his job".

Registered: 3/10/2001 | posted: 5/21/2003 at 8:31:24 PM ET Actually, Liz Smith is the gossip columnist for the New York Post. I believe Michael Reidel's job title is theatre critic/entertainment reporter. Both come with the job description of presenting FACTS. Something he does not always do. I think some people may just be referring to him as a gossip columnist because he's been writing such rediculous stuff. If I am wrong please correct me, however, I still do not think he does his job well!!

It's one thing for Riedel to do what he does, but what I found odd was the number of Gypsy reviews, whether positive or negative, that addressed or made reference to his attacks.

| posted: 5/21/2003 at 9:45:48 PM ET I do not consider Reidel to be a Gossip Columnist. He was hired to be a regular columnist, and whatever his specialty is, it is not meant to be gossip.
His articles do not start off with, "Well, I've got a scoop for you today..." or "Guess who I saw cheating on their spouse kiddies." like Liz Smith's and Cindy Adam's colums do.
Though most in the industry (and people on this board and other Broadway message boards) consider his articles as TRASH, I do not think they consider them to be GOSSIP.
Actually, I enjoy reading Liz Smith's and Cindy Adam's articles because the are purely meant as entertainment, as opposed to a source of factual and useful information. They are a break from "real news." The truth is, Reidel isn't even good enough to be a gossip columnist.

He actually recently took part in a Broadway conference at Hofstra University and was part of the CRITICS CIRLCE.I could provide links to many online articles referring to him as the above if you'd like....

| posted: 5/22/2003 at 10:27:03 PM ET Well it intrigues me so I did a little research. I looked up the archives of theater reviews and Michael Reidel has never reviewed a show. Only Clive Barnes, Donald Lyons and a couple of other that only appear once. But no Michael Reidel so I would rule out Theater Critic. All I can say is maybe Hofstra was desperate. He also does not show up under Gossip or Columnists. Unfortunatley there is no way on the NY Post website to look up their employees. So I have to come to the conclusion that somewhere in Reidel's desk there is a job description that reads "Write trash that annoys and angers as many people as possible and resembles the truth as little as possible ... And other duties as assigned by your supervisor".
So I'm assigning him his own title: SH?T Writer.
