Registered: 6/26/2003 | posted: 7/29/2008 at 12:56:03 AM ET Had the double pleasure this weekend of spending Friday night at Bernadette’s sold-out concert with the San Francisco Symphony and Saturday afternoon at her jam-packed reading and book signing at Books, Inc in the Castro.
The concert started with just the SFS for the first 30 minutes during which time the conductor, Edwin Outwater, kept describing their portion as brief, probably realizing that the 2,734 people filling the Hall were not there to listen to the Symphony. The San Francisco Symphony is one of the country’s finest orchestras, as Bernadette herself stated during the concert, but you would hardly know it from the way they slogged though some unfortunate arrangements of the music from West Side Story, A Little Night Music, and Gypsy. Fortunately after intermission, the orchestra, with the fifty or so musicians who remained to accompany Peters, sounded much tighter, warmer, and less mushy. Outwater did earn points when he mentioned that he became aware of Bernadette as a kid watching the Muppet show and that she and Harry Belafonte were his two favorite guests on that program.
Things of note. No “Unexpected Song” In the 30 some odd Bernadette concerts I have attended over the past 20 years, the only other time she didn’t perform that song was 10 years ago when she also performed with the SFS but that time she basically did the second half of her Carnegie Hall concert. No “Rose’s Turn” either. I could tell that she wasn’t going to do that number because the sweater and shoes weren’t on stage but since she also dropped “The Gentleman is a Dope,” I found it interesting that she still started her part of the show with the Carnegie overture rather than including anyone of those three songs.
Here’s what she sang:
Overture
Let Me Entertain You
No One Is Alone
Dame
Fever
Mr. Snow
Some Enchanted Evening
Shenandoah
When You Wish / A Dream
Johanna
Not A Day Goes By
You Could Drive
With So Little / Children Will Listen
Being Alive
Kramer’s Song
Other things: When Bernadette was trying to sell her house from the stage, some guy in the audience asked how much it was, and after briefly hesitating, Bernadette said, “Make me an offer.” I liked how Bernadette took the time to acknowledge the Symphony soloists by name after No One Is Alone, Fever, Some Enchanted Evening, and When You Wish Upon a Star. During her opening remarks she said that San Francisco was probably her favorite city in the country; that she loved New York, but she loved Northern California and loved San Francisco. (Hopefully that means it won’t be seven years before she actually performs here again.) Before “Being Alive” she said that the evening was drawing to a close and as audience members cried out in protest she said, “We’re not done yet. The fat lady didn’t sing.” And then she did and said something funny but I’m not sure what exactly she was indicating. Anyone who was there have an interpretation?
Special treat on Saturday was attending the book signing. She started by reading the story, sang "Kramer's Song" accappella and then took about 15 questions from the audience. From her answer to one question, it seems that she's already filming the Grey's Anatomy episode, saying she was going back to finish it. She talked also about the Living Proof movie and how it detailed the obstacles faced by Connick's character to develop a drug that acutally cured rather than treated since the drug companies were more interested in treating not curing. She also said that the movie shows how the Fire and Ice Ball came about and that in the Grey's Anatomy episode, her character is in a limosine accident on the way to the Fire and Ice Ball. Someone asked about the writings and music that's in the Broadway Barks book and if they were chosen for a reason and Bernadette said that that was all Liz Murphy, maybe she had "secret messages in there" and that she only saw one thing that she thought was kind of strange and Murphy removed it. She was relaxed and funny and very accomodating taking pictures and greeting both two and four-legged fans.
And almost forgot to say that her goddaughter Isabel was in attendance and Bernadette introduced her to the crowd. She was very cute. Just stood there sweetly while Bernadette held her hand and talked about how much she loved animals and had two little dogs, somedays thought she wanted to be a vet etc.

Someone also uploaded the video of her reading on youtube. I got a lot of the q&a on my camera's video but I can't get it to load onto my computer. I realize now that one should record digital video in short segments. This is like 12 min. and it just seems to take an eternity to get 10% loaded. Anyone know if there is some trick to getting it loaded?

I think I can safely speak for all us BP fans who live in other parts of the world when I say that reading posts like yours really brings the Bernadette concert experience alive for us poor deprived folk.
I don't know how much the renewal fee is for a US passport, but I'm perfectly willing to stump up the cost if Bernbadette ever feels like venturing out into the world.

That's all the further I've gotten so far and I LOVE it.
