Registered: 12/25/2007 | posted: 12/31/2007 at 11:11:54 PM ET Hi everyone! I'm rather new here (feel free to skim my introduction ), but I've been ghosting about the forums for a little while and I've gotten about halfway through the archives so I feel I know this place a little bit (of course, I started at the back because I like to be contrary, so I don't know any recent happenings ). I am, like many of you seem to be, a HUGE Broadway fan (I curse the fact that I was too young and unaware of B'way to have seen Gypsy!) and have recently come to adore Bernadette Peters. I always liked her and knew who she was, something just hit me when I watched 'Hey, Mr. Producer' (which I own because I'm such a huge Julie Andrews fan that it's practically past obsession actually, I was quite struck by some of the similarities in mannerisms Julie and Bernadette have, but I'll stop rambling ) the other day and then I begged for the Gypsy CD & Into the Woods DVD (Yes, I am also a huge Sondheim fan, in case you hadn't guessed. ) for Christmas AND if that weren't enough she's coming to my state to give a concert - unfortunately on the night of my school play. You have no idea how annoyed I am, because there's no way that her concert wouldn't be a potentially more educational experience than being in this play, but if I want to be in next year's play, well...do you think if I wrote her she'd reschedule? ... don't I just wish.
Hopefully I didn't bore you TOO much - I tend to be rather long winded, so please accept my apologies for my language arts geekiness. To the actual question:
I wanted to ask some people who would know the answer, as I've been debating this the last few days... Would you recommend buying hard copies of the Sondheim Etc and Sondheim Etc, Etc, CDs or would it be okay to just buy the iTunes downloads? ... in other words...do they have good inserts w/more pretty pictures of Bernadette or information about the concert or the songs or the CD or anything in them? Otherwise I'll just buy the songs on iTunes, but I just wanted to ask first. Thanks for the help, and Happy New Year!

In Sondheim Etc. there is a review of her concert and in Sondheim Etc. Etc. there is a blurb about the night that Bernadette wrote. Enjoy them they are wonderful CDs.
Happy New Year!

I just didn't want to order them if the insert wasn't cool...then I'd just need the music. But now, I guess now I'll be ordering some CD's...
Happy New Year!

Definitely worth it. Best of all though is if you can get a used copy of the first CD that includes "Making Love Alone." Unfortunately, that song ended up being deleted later.
Welcome to the board! Love your post. You sound like a really smart kid.

Might I also suggest, if you don't already have it, the Royal Festival Hall DVD? It's virtually the same programme as the Carnegie Hall CD with the second half devoted to Sondheim songs .... and the pictures are even better than those in the CD booklet --- they move!
IMHO she sounds even better in the London concert, her voice is more streamlined -- for want of a better word.

Registered: 12/25/2007 | posted: 1/1/2008 at 4:08:44 PM ET Thanks for the recommendations, everyone - you guys are so helpful! I knew about the deleted track, but haven't seen a copy on ebay...I'll have to search a couple more times for an older copy before I order.
Karen, you seem to know me already - I'm a sucker for scrutinizing punctuation. (And no, I am not sassing you. I honestly have a grammar/English thing, as long as it's not my own. )
And thanks for the suggestion, Scottie! I was planning on getting her concert regardless of what I did with the CD's....but I probably will be settling on the VHS...the DVD's like $75 on amazon right now! I don't have that kind of money when the VHS sells for $5, lol...unless the DVD has some crazy hidden bonus feature or something....which would be my luck!
Thanks again for all the help! I'm really glad to have found this place - it sounds like a lot of fun.

While I actually paid about $35 for my copy, the person I was bidding against on eBay snagged it two days later for about $20. It really just depends on timing. I have no idea if there are any differences between the VHS and DVD, but I do know that I am somewhat impatient and like to be able to go directly to certain songs in the concert when trying to prove a point to someone....Yes, I have been known to grab her concert and go directly to a song performance to show her mastery or interpretation over that of other singers. I probably need therapy or something. Regardless, the important thing is for any fan to have a copy of that concert as it is truly an experience.

From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 1/2/2008 at 5:24:53 AM ET The only extras on the DVD are some photos and a biography, nothing to get excited about. But I totally agree with Jaeleigh, it is nice to be able to directly pinpoint certain songs, plus the sound and picture quality is heaps better on DVD.
I didn't realise the DVD had been deleted until now. It would be great to have a reissue with the missing songs and funny chit-chat restored.

| posted: 1/2/2008 at 1:19:24 PM ET About the first Carnegie CD with the deleted track - I picked one up on Half.com for just a few dollars not too long ago. That site is another good resource for out-of-print items, if you obsessively check back frequently and snoop around.

Registered: 12/25/2007 | posted: 1/2/2008 at 3:12:37 PM ET Thanks for all the help, everyone {again, you are all AMAZING!}. I actually snagged the Sondheim Etc. CD w/the deleted track off amazon for half the price of buying the normal CD last night. *loves individual sellers* Thanks for the Borders idea - I definitely will check that out. And half.com sounds promising as well. I'll have to keep my eye out.
&& about the DVD vs. VHS - I didn't even think about the ability to jump to certain songs. That would certainly be nice...the DVD's still $50 on half.com though...I'll keep looking different places.

Registered: 12/25/2007 | posted: 1/7/2008 at 8:58:43 PM ET Just thought I'd let ya'll know that my copy of the CD came in - isn't Bernadette amazing? *drools* I haven't had an extensive amount of time to listen to it (I hate being a student!) but what I've heard sounds amazing. 'Being Alive' and 'Not A Day Goes By' (two of my favorite songs) were chilling. And I'm not familiar with 'Happiness' (I know, bad Sondheim fan! I'm working on it...) but what I've heard sounds no less than astoundingly amazing. I glossed over the other songs (while I did my Spanish homework) but they sound brilliant too - all of them, really. I think this is going to be one of those rare CD's where there isn't one song I don't like. I'm going to end up obsessing over this CD. Can't wait to get the concert, now (as if I could before!)!
Thanks again for all your great help - it was totally worth it!
