From: MN | posted: 10/9/2002 at 5:50:01 PM ET Hello everyone,
Okay, so I'm in a pickle (LOL). Our spring musical this year for my h.s. is Les Miserables, the student version. And...since it's such a challenging piece of work to do, they've already begun doing audition workshops for the show, so that way the cast already knows the music by early spring for rehearsals etc.
Anyways...
At this time, they're doing audition workshops for the main characters, and here's what they're looking for:
-An expressive song in a comfortable range (I'm a mezzo soprano..)
-Have piece memorized
-Blocking it as if it were a live stage performance
And other they're also looking for things such as props etc. to enhance the characterazation of the piece...
Soooo anyways.....all I want are some suggestions for good audition pieces because I dunno that many B'way showtunes. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! :-D
Take care,
Stacy

From: MN | posted: 10/9/2002 at 5:50:59 PM ET Oh, I almost forgot, we can't use songs from Les Miz cuz they're gonna do that for call backs..--(if u make call backs, they'll give u a piece from Les Miz to sing at the call back)
Take care,
Stacy

That's just some auditioning tips that I was told last year in school, and while not everyone may agree w/ them, it's just my 2 cents. I wish you the best in the audition.

| posted: 10/11/2002 at 3:14:56 PM ET I have no idea what mezzo soprano means, but I can suggest some expressive songs: Time Heals Everything (from Mack and Mabel), I Only Have Eyes for You (from 42nd Street), Unexpected Song (from Song and Dance), They Can't Take That Away From Me (by George and Ira Gershwin).
What you should do is go to a music store, get sheet music and lyrics to some songs that you may want to choose from, even if you have never heard the song before, and sing them. This way, it's your style, because you haven't heard anyone else sing it before; and you can be comfortable with yourself on stage.

Registered: 6/29/2002 | posted: 10/12/2002 at 8:02:40 AM ET i've been the same pickle (tee-hee) before My advice is to:
pick a song that you really like and are really comfortable singing...
make it semi-relevant (for le miz, something slow-ish or sad, for something like annie, something happy and upbeat)
and for a list of good audition songs, go here: http://www.geocities.com/Broadway/4131/Recommendations/index.html
it's a really good site, you click on your range and they give you reccomended songs.
hope i helped.

From: MN | posted: 10/12/2002 at 11:44:27 AM ET Hi ,
Thanks you guys for all your help!.....Yesterday, I found out that there was some coaching sessions w/ the vocal director of the show so I asked for her help in selecting a song. She suggested a song that's comfortable in my range just as one of you said. But she also wanted me to pick a song that I was familiar with. So she suggested that I sing, "In My Own Little Corner" from Cinderella.
I'm not sure if I'm correct (I'm still a novice voice student)...but being a mezzo soprano is like u can sing high, but not as high like a soprano would...-like if u bought a book for the mezzo soprano voice, it wouldn't have all those REALLY high notes in them and etc...I hope I'm making sense LOL..I'm not sure if I'm correct w/ what a mezzo soprano is so pls. feel free to correct me!
But thanks so much again for all of your help w/ the suggestions! I really appreciate it!
Take care,
Stacy

alto is low girls
soprano is high girls
and mezzo soprano is in the middle
i think mezzo means "middle" or something like that in italian or something.

Registered: 11/12/2002 | posted: 11/12/2002 at 11:50:59 PM ET Good luck!!! "Les Mis" is my favorite Broadway show ever, with "Gypsy" coming in second. Anything from "Gypsy" is great for singing in musical theater, particularly "You'll Never Get Away from Me" as a ballad for "Les Mis" auditions. "If I Loved You" from "Oklahoma" is beautiful as well.
I'm sorry to take this on a totally cheesy turn, but I can't help myself-- if Josh Hartnett shows up to the show, please report back and give him a kiss, if not for yourself, for me! He's the best (a really nice guy; I've met him). And you'll wow him when you star in it!!!!

From: MN | posted: 11/13/2002 at 10:19:05 PM ET Thanks!
I should've written a reply to this post sooner to update any who were interested, but I forgot hehe.
I didn't make callbacks (which is this Friday 11/15/02)...but I did make it into the ensemble.
In January, there's auditions for the small solos in the ensemble, so I'm gonna do that!
Josh Hartnett....::goes into daydream state:: ...Isn't he dreamy? LOL I would die if he came to see the show...though I really doubt that he would come to my h.s. to see it though...my cousin works @ Northwest airlines, and my other cousin (his sis) was w/ him...and Josh was there..going from Minneapolis/St. Paul to L.A. I believe...and my cousin (the sis) got to keep his boarding pass, so the next day @ school she's flashing it around everywhere...ugh I'm so jealous!--the people you can spot at the airport! lol :-D
Take care,
Stacy
