Just a quick recommendation for a great movie I saw this afternoon, Robert Altman's new film, The Company, a fictionalized backstage(and onstage)look at the Joffrey Ballet. I think a lot of people on this board would particularly enjoy it. One little side-note: the song My Funny Valentine is used in a number of versions as a recurring motif throughout the soundtrack, and I noticed in the closing credits that one version used an arrangement by Marvin Laird. Kinda neat.

Just be prepared if you go see The Company that there is noooooo plot. and by no plot i mean no plot. So if you like ballet go, but if you like plot more than ballet...reconsider.

damn, she's cool.

Very, very true; not a conventional "well-knit" plot, but here's a relevant definition from The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Literary Terms by Chris Baldick. "Episodic:constructed as a narrative by a succession of loosely connected incidents rather than by an integrated plot. Picaresque novels and many medieval romances have an episodic structure in which the only link between one episode and the next is the presence of the same central character." In the film, Ry(Neve Campbell) serves as this character in a typical Robert Altman picaresque form. I agree the film's definitely not for everyone, but I still think many of the people on this board(who aren't necessarily dancers, but are performers of some type)will really appreciate what it's all about.

This movie is on my list, and I plan on seeing it tomorrow (along with "Golda").

I'm saying it was bad...I liked it to some extent and the dancing was amazing, I also understand that the plotlessness was on purpose but I personally spent the first half of the movie trying to figure out why everything was happening. When I realized they weren't gonna tell me it got a little better, but still left me dissapointed (not the entire film just that aspect of it). But i do think people should see this, because Neve Campbell is a great dancer (the ballet company actually asked her to stay and join once shooting was over). okay thats all.

damn, she's cool.

I like most of Robert Altman's films and I loved THE COMPANY.

In viewing THE COMPANY it looked to me that he felt great affection for the artists (dancers) and I thought the photography was beautiful.

The Joffrey Ballet will perform three works by Sir Frederick Ashton at The MET - July 8, 2004. Don't miss them live!

Just wanted to bump this up for those who would be interested in catching the Joffrey live. They are, indeed, spectacular. I will now attempt a link. Who knows if it will be successful?
