| posted: 2/26/2006 at 12:22:15 PM ET So, I don't recal seeing any discussion about The Color Purple. I could be wrong, but the title did not come up in my search.
I saw this show last Tuesday evening. It is one of (if not THE most) beautifully adapted theatrical pieces I have ever seen.
LaChanze is amazing as Celie, a 14 year old girl who grows into middle age through the performance. The struggles she goes through, the the torture she endures, and her acceptance of others and herself is both heart breaking and heart warming.
I had never seen the movie before yesterday, so I went in not even knowing much about the storyline.
I definitely preferred the Broadway Show to the movie, even though both are done well.
Has anyone else seen the Broadway Show? Your thoughts?
I think LaChanze and possibly the show itself are shoe-ins for Tonys this year.
If you haven't seen it, they have same-day student rush tickets (front and second row center) for $26.25

I adore Patti LuPone; but if she wins, I feel it will be because she hasn't won a Tony in so many years.
There are also shows that haven't premiered yet. Pajama Game just opened. I haven't seen it. Still, I'm most likely going to stick with my gut on this one.

LOL. I thought something looked a little off.

From: NYC | posted: 2/26/2006 at 4:55:02 PM ET I saw "The Color Purple" with Noah. We did rush. I'm glad I didn't pay over $25, however I did enjoy it very much. I saw the understudy Kenita R. Miller as "Celie". Apparently LaChanze cannot appear in 8 shows a week, which I have a problem understanding. My opinion is that if you can't do a job as it should be done then you shouldn't have the job. I thought Kenita was astounding. She is 23 years old and has only been performing for a few years. She showed depth beyond her years...I think she should win the role full time. It is not a show without problems and dragging bits, but overall I think it is a beautiful show and it did stir my emotions.
I think you all know who I think the Tony winner should be. Of course Tony voters are a often misguided lot, but as a wise lady named Bernadette once said, "it's not about prizes".

| posted: 2/26/2006 at 6:29:48 PM ET From what I understand concerning LaChanzes health is that she had intensive surgery last May and is still recovering from it. I do adore Kenita though and hope to see her next weekend. I do have to say that while I haven't seen the show, I believe both Celie and Mrs. Lovett are complex characters...but the more complex being Mrs. Lovett. Patti LuPone needs to take home this year's Tony!!!

Ahhh good catch on the shoe thing Karen. I did not know how to spell it.
Hmmm lol perhaps I should see ST within the next couple of weeks on stage, as opposed to on the television. Then I can give an unbiased opinion.

From: NYC | posted: 2/27/2006 at 8:15:33 AM ET Christine - you cannot compare the original ST to the current ST. It's almost an entirely different show. Please see it. You can get $36.50 tickets if you go to the box office. It is a small theatre so back mezz tickets are fine. There are partial view tickets for $36.50 in the orchestra as well and I sit there often and while they are excellent, I don't recommend sitting there for a first viewing.

From: northern VA | posted: 2/27/2006 at 11:45:32 AM ET I get uncomfortable when an argument for a person winnning a Tony is because of the role's complexity/depth. Lucille Frank (Parade) is arguably a more complex role than Annie Oakley, for example.
Jenn, taking a break from a fantastic Mardi Gras!

I wasn't. I've seen the current revival. Just not on stage.
