| posted: 11/23/2005 at 10:39:03 PM ET I went to the midnight showing at the Zigfeld last night. I didn't go in expecting much (I'm not a HUGE fan of the staged version), but I liked it enough.
I think the atmosphere made a big difference. I was with some of my best friends, and the entire theater was filled with fans. Also 2 of the actors (Tracie and Anthony) showed up to watch it with everyone.
There was something wonderful about everyone crying, laughing, clapping, and yes mooing together. Although, lol I refused to moo. It seemed strange to me, but it was funny to hear others do it.
It had flaws, but overall I thought it was well adapted. There was actually only 2 moments that I thought were strange, but I won't discuss it for those who have not seen it yet.
I think Jonathan Larson would be proud of it.
It made a difference (visually) as far as my liking the story better. I've always liked the music.

When I went to see it, I thought that it would be without as many songs, but it had all of them! When I got back home I immediately downloaded all of the songs! Everyone should see this awesome movie!

From: New York, NY | posted: 11/25/2005 at 9:02:33 PM ET I saw it today. Wasn't too impressed. I loved the stage version. I was glad the original cast was back but I felt like it was really lacking what the stage version had. And I thought parts of it were really cheesy. I can't imagine not having seen the stage show and just going to see this film blindly.

| posted: 11/27/2005 at 3:00:55 PM ET Well, I haven't seen the stage version yet (believe it or not!) and thought the movie was wonderful. I plan on seeing the show and seeing La Boheme at the MET also in December. Hoepfully, this will be a full circle experience for myself!

The visuals really help (the Rent set is pretty abstract) to follow the story and I could understand the words. When I saw it on Broadway, it was so freakin' loud that it sounded distorted and the lyrics were hard to follow.
I agree with Christine... I think Jonathan would've been quite happy with adaption. They didn't take too many liberties from the show.
Quite enjoyable.

I saw it on Broadway a few years ago, and I don't know if it was a bad cast? I know I didn't like the set at all. I just remember be very underwhelmed.
I sort of did go into the movie blindly. I didn't remember THAT much about all of the characters going in. All I knew/remembered was about the one dying, and one being a "filmmaker."
I was just out of highschool when I saw it on Broadway. I think my years since are what caused me to understand/appreciate the story through the movie.

It also helped me get a better idea of the types of places they were talking about from the stage version. I think the La Vie Boheme scene in the cafe was brought to life so much more than what can be done in a stage version. Overall, I liked both the stage and screen versions a lot.

I've seen the stage version, too, both in NYC and on tour, but it was definitely easier to follow on screen. And I cried at the movie, which is something that didn't happen when I saw it live...but I've been crying at like every movie lately so that could be totally unrelated. Anyway, I thought the movie was well done...the only thing I didn't really like was the stuff that was spoken, that in the stage show is more of a song, like Mark's intro, etc. It sounded kind of awkward to be spoken since it rhymed and all. But anyway.

Registered: 5/3/2004 | posted: 12/1/2005 at 11:21:31 AM ET I saw RENT on Monday night and absolutely loved it. Yes, there are differences between the show and the movie, but that was assumed by me prior to going because after all, the two are in completely different mediums.
The movie was just as fantastic as the show in my opinion, and I've been a fan of the show for quite some time now. I'm really very please with how it turned out.
p.s.- Tracie Thoms was fabulous! Her and Idina were absolutely perfect and hot(?) together.

Although I'll echo what a friend said, which is that it's hard to feel much sympathy for the characters.
Angel is my favorite character. I finally see why people like Adam Pascal. And Idina comes off better here than in Wicked for me.
Ahh Jesse Martin, what a sweet gentle soul he plays, with a great big smile.
