Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 10/20/2004 at 11:04:56 AM ET I'm watching it, taping it, and really enjoying it. I have this problem with most documentaties though, which is that you're presented with a stream of visual images, only a few of which are fully identified. I wish every film clip, photo, etc. could have some kind of description, maybe down in the corner of the screen so you knew exactly what you're looking at and what its source is. For example, when they're talking about Longacre Square in 1893, they show some silent footage of a slummy looking area. But it couldn't really be actual documentary footage, so what exactly is it? It's not that I mean to single this show out, because virtually all documentaries do it and it really bugs me. It's as though there's this attitude that since it's a film, it doesn't need to be held to the same standards a book does in documenting its sources.I resent the implication that they're genuinely showing what they're talking about, when you know that they're not. Beyond that quibble, I'm really loving it. Too bad the companion book costs $60.

In response, it may not exactly be Longacre Square, but it also could have been or would have certainly been similar. At that time, the square was home to brothels and other houses of ill-repute. Things in Times Square haven't changed much except for the theaters.

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 10/20/2004 at 1:15:53 PM ET It's hard for me to clearly put into words what I'm objecting to, and maybe I'm just being compulsive or anal or something. It's just that I feel uncomfortable when documentaries attempt to create the illusion that you're actually seeing a visual image that is exactly what the narrator's words are saying. So often, there's no historical footage available, and some sort of generic stock footage is used instead. That's okay, but when it happens, I personally wish it would be labelled as such. It's important to me to know exactly what I'm looking at. Otherwise, I feel manipulated, however subtly. As I said though, it's such a pervasive practice, that I really don't mean to single out for criticism this one show just because it follows the prevailing convention.

Amazon is selling the companion book for $40 (there are also used copies for $32). B&N is selling it for $42,and if you have a membership card,it's $39. Half.com may have used copies.
Or...interlibrary loan it from your library!

So informative for a broadway geek as myself anyways, great infomation and interviews especially Stephen Sondheim and Al Hirshfeld. (I had no idea Al Hirshfeld was still alive)The history of broadway theater is so complex that you can always learn more and I love it! One of the highlights was when Julie Andrews was on stage at the Shubert and they showed a panoramic view ( I could actually spot where I sat at gypsy the 6 times i went). You also get a sense of appreciation for the sheer beauty of the theaters when they show it from the stage perspective. Anyways, just my two cents
