I just don't fancy her voice that much, personally I did like her in Gypsy but how could you possibly compare her to legends like Ethel Merman and Angela Lansbury who are the roots of Broadway ?

"Most Mama Roses have been too butch or brash (Bette Midler, Tyne Daly, and even Ethel Merman), too sophisticated (Angela Lansbury), or too ladylike (Betty Buckley). It remained for Peters to achieve the perfect blend of fanaticism and femininity, of monster and victim. Here for once is a demonic stage mother who can also convey sexiness, pathos, and charm. We understand now how she could enslave a man, make children her thralls, breach hearts and barriers, and steal restaurant flatware with puckish style. Also what made her what she is desperate to attain vicariously through a daughter what her background prevented her from becoming herself..."

From Internet Network: 68.9.252.x | posted: 8/12/2004 at 11:07:02 PM ET I think many people would argue that Bernadette should be a 5-time Tony Award winner: Sunday in the Park, Song & Dance, Into the Woods, Annie Get Your Gun, and Gypsy.

Into the Woods is well deserved but I understand their reasons for not putting her down on the list. If she was nominated she would have won. AGYG I heard was amazing and well deserved. And I CANNOT believe she didn't get the tony for GYPSY! I have never seen such an amazing show in my life.

Just a good year for Lead Actresses in a musical.
