THANK YOU, Sister Rose. That is so helpful. I will order those books. Meanwhile, I will hit the NYT listings. I really appreciate the community profiles-that's great. QPL has that for their branches, so this is great info.

Jenn, I lived in Frederick, Maryland for most of my childhood and several years after I graduated from college. I actually know someone who is a librarian there. That's what you do, right? If you need any help in that area, do not hesitate to contact me.

The Village Voice is also a good source for listings and they are online as well. Do Not, I repeat, DO NOT, pay for a service that gives you apartment listings. They ask you to pay a fee and give you a number to call about whatever apartment caught your eye and brought you to them. Then they will give you more apartment listings. It is a hoax. Also, if you find an apartment listing that just seems sooooo much better than all the other apartments in that price range, it is more than likely too good to be true.

And Jenn, the sacrifices I meant (though spending less money is good as well) it more in size of your living space and the possessions that you feel you must keep around you. That's what you really have to reimagine for yourself. You really can do without a lot of your possessions and you really can get along in a MUCH smaller space. It will take some adjustment but it will be okay. And yes, the car thing. Unless you are very well off, having a car is just impossible. Between the car payments, the extremely high insurance and the parking fees (unless you want to be moving your car every couple of days from a street spot just make car ownership impossible and you truly do not need it. You can get anywhere you want to go MUCH faster by bus or subway.

Children's librarian here, Moljul. I know someone who knows someone who works for Queens Public, but I'm not really sure how much contact they still have.

Thank you, thank you for your help. I understand about the possessions thing.

I do like the DC area, so MD is definitely still in the picture. But I've wanted to work for QPL since graduate school, and I just know more about it, since it's always getting (good) attention and recognition.

But now I'm off to my current employment, which is a fine one in itself.

Jenn

Maryland, Pennsylviania, and northern Virginia.

Jenn - Heh, something wrong with the West Coast? I hear there are some libraries out here that are still open a few days a week.

Sorry, PTM!

Los Angeles Public, I believe, pays a better salary than NYPL. But, sorry....

Well if you want to seriously consider Frederick or Montgomery County Maryland, just let me know. I can contact my friend. I'm sure she would be willing to meet with you or answer any questions, give you heads up about jobs, etc.

Well there are a few more places in CA besides LA, San Diego, San Jose, the San Francisco Bay Area but I can understand wanting to be on the east coast.
