Have you considered other schools not in NYC? Do a search on BroadwayWorld-there have been quite a few discussions on universities and conservatories offering musical theatre degrees.

Anon- I actually am considering doing a double degree with Tufts and NEC. I just can't decide if it is too big of a time committment to try and attend both schools. I am also, more seriously considering going to Columbia and studying with a teacher from Manhattan SoM. I am just very unsure if either of those are right for me. I also think that I might not get into both NEC and Columbia, so that decision will be made for me.

About being either a small fish in a big pond or a big fish in a small pond...this is something you will have to feel for yourself. IMHO I think that at some point it is best to be a big fish in a small pond because you will have opportunities to get cast more often and actually work onstage. I know many of my friends who went to bigger named schools with a huge musical theatre program-and they were talented as heck but didn't get to perform a principal role once on the main stage. They still received great training, and yeah they know what the "real world of performing" is like-BUT they will admit that they wish they had more experience and more on their resume. I think that as long as YOU challenge YOURSELF enough and are able to work with a GOOD faculty or directors then being a big fish in a small pond is actually not a bad idea at all!! But you have to keep yourself in balance and always always remember that you are a big fish in a small pond NOW--but that could change at ANY point. I do understand what you're saying about wanting to be in NYC-and I think you should be there...I don't know how close you are if you would go to a smaller school-but if you're close enough to still be able to do other things and a lot of auditions on the side then HEY GO FOR IT!! That's a great place to be. But it's also not bad to look into other schools outside of where you're at.
I agree whole heartedly with MOJUL's comments--I've heard and experienced similiar things with myself and with fellow actors in New York. It's a tough business. But I think you have to always remember that NO ONE has all the answers--especially about this career and about being an artist and performer...NO ONE-within yourself you must take a journey, and this journey HAS TO BE your own! Your parents I'm sure are just wanting the best for you-and yes having to face the real world can be tough BUT only YOU can take YOUR journey. If this is what you want to do then DO IT!!! Things will change believe me...and my dear Future Mama Rose you're SO young right now(I know you get tired of hearing it--believe me I did)...but believe me ENJOY THESE DAYS WHILE THEY LAST because you will pretty soon realize that you can never get yesterday back. Don't stress about the applications, auditions, etc. It is important that you do well--but learn something from all of this and put every experience you have, good or bad, to a place where you can always retrieve what happened and learn from it. Life is beautiful--always always always always dream! It's true you may never get to perform a leading role in a broadway musical, star in a feature film, be on a popular television series, or perform a solo concert at Radio City Music Hall--but that's not everyone in this biz's destiny. I have many older friends who have actually been making a WONDERFUL living doing chorus work in B-way shows, performing in tours, doing a few commercials now and then, having a couple small parts in films, and performing on cruise ships, etc. They are VERY happy--because that is their journey...they may not be Bernadette Peters or Hugh Jackman, but to them they are successful because they have stuck with it for so long, don't have to have a "day job," and realize how lucky they are to be doing what they're doing.
I wish you all the best of luck! This is a tough time-but enjoy your youth before it fades away...*singing STEAL ME from the opera THE OLD MAID AND THE THIEF* LOL

I also agree with everything you said, moljul. Very well put. Operaboi, great advice too. You helped to further my belief that happiness is as important as job stability. Whatever you decide, futuremamarose, just remember that you are the one making decisions for yourself, and that whether they're right or wrong doesn't really matter in the long run. What matters is that you learn from your experiences, positive and negative. And don't stress about the application process too much so that you don't enjoy your last year of high school. I must admit, I didn't really like HS, but I had an older cousin who advised me to pace myself comfortably during the application and selection process so I could enjoy my senior year. And I'm so happy I listened to her--if my three years before that were as enjoyable I can't imagine how good the experience would have been. Even though a lot of people I know say that you couldn't pay them to go back to high school now that they're in college (mostly because of the freedom), I might consider it, if and only if it was my senior year. I love college, though, and I think that my love for it stems from my positive senior year of high school. Wow, I'm really rambling. Anyway, take of this what you can and run with it. Just remember you're your own person and only YOU can make things happen for you. Don't settle for less than your dreams, otherwise you'll have to deal with disappointment or regret.

I think this quote from Sunday In The Park With George (Move On) is appropriate....
"I CHOSE AND MY WORLD WAS SHAKEN. SO WHAT?! THE CHOICE MAY HAVE BEEN MISTAKEN...THE CHOOSING WAS NOT..."

I was actually pondering that same quote this morning...Isn't it great how Steven Sondheim relates to everyday life?

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THAT QUOTE. it's my away message all the time!

Thanks everyone... very helpful. I'm thinking more seriously about it, and have lately been opening up to more things, like doing a double major in Communications and Theatre, or do Theatre as a minor. I mean, if i am meant to be in theatre it won't happen from taking that as a major in college. it'll happen from me going out there and trying it out in the real world outside of school.

btw, is Communications the right Major if i want to become a PR?

I think so. At my school, anyway, PR hopefuls are in the communications dept.

shrinkerkid-

Check out this discussion:

College Confidential-Musical Theater discussion FAQ

Lots of great material-always a site I recommend for those looking for information on musical theatre colleges/conservatories. Wagner has been discussed in the discussion. The "thread" link takes you to the thread-there are links to other files.
