I recently finished reading Lovely Bones by Alice Seabold. It is about a 14 year old girl who is murdered and her views from heaven. (Don't worry, I didn't give anything away! They tell you this on the first page.). I highly recommend it. I usually do not read books relating to murder and mystery, but this was excellent.

Right now I'm still in the midst of reading Wicked. I usually stick to biographies. Wicked is the first fiction book (apart from Shakespeare's works) that I have read in almost 2 years.

And the one where she talks about When one of Judy's men was drunk and walking around naked beating Judy, while Lorna and Joey were in their rooms scared. It was horrifying to even imagine.

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 7/2/2004 at 11:33:38 PM ET I too agree about Me and My Shadows; definitely one of the very best show business memoirs/bios ever. I was really impressed with how honest and balanced Lorna Luft managed to be. I would basically call it a must read for anyone interested in Judy Garland or performers in general or really for just anyone at all. And then, after that, they turned it into one of the best miniseries of all time! Amazing accomplishment.
By the way, this is a great idea for a thread. I'm going to have to give it some thought and post later. Looking forward to everyone's suggestions.

"Blindness" by Jose Sarayamo
You won't be disappointed (especially for the Margaret Atwood virgins out there!)

My suggestions:
Killer Angels
100 years in Hollywood
Gypsy (of course)
Wicked
Casebook

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 7/3/2004 at 7:05:42 PM ET The book I'm currently reading is "Sir John Gielgud: a life in letters," which is fabulous. I'm reading a library copy, but I'm realizing that I need to buy my own. It's just too good not to have around permanently.
There are so many books that I love, but here are a dozen random favorites. I'm limiting these recommendations to fiction; I'll list some non-fiction favorites another time.
Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys
Flaubert's Parrot by Julian Barnes
City of Glass by Paul Auster
Empire of the Sun by J.G. Ballard
The Ruined Map by Kobo Abe
Libra by Don DeLillo
The Tremor of Forgery by Patricia Highsmith
Fifth Business by Robertson Davies
Reader's Block by David Markson
A Severed Head by Iris Murdoch
Two Serious Ladies by Jane Bowles
The Last of Mr Norris by Christopher Isherwood

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 7/3/2004 at 9:20:24 PM ET I love Iris Murdoch too. All of her books are great, but another one that I would especially recommend is "The Sea, The Sea".
I purposely didn't see the film or read her husband's memoirs, which it was based upon, because of my personal misgivings about the possibly exploitative nature of the whole project. I really wish her husband, John Bayley, had not written those books. My preference would have been that his memories of their relationship and her battle with Alzeimer's had remained private.
Just my opinion.
