Hiya, I was reading an old thread and moljul, you had mentioned going to the NY Library of Perf. Arts and finding some articles on BP. How does one go about doing this? Do you need a card to get in? Can you just walk in and look at articles? Are the articles good?
Thanks!

Hi

For the NY Performing Arts Library, you need an ACCESS card. The ACCESS card is different than the regular NY Public Library card, and to get it, you have to go down to the Library for the performing arts, and use the application on their computer. Then you bring the application to the ID room, (along with photo ID and proof of address) and they'll take your picture and make up a card for you.

With the ACCESS card, you can look up restricted materials on the TVs (as in, say you're doing research for a project and you have to watch a musical that isn't commercially available -- you'd use your card to gain access to the library's video room and their Broadway musical library) and you can also take out books on the performing arts.

You don't need a card to look up reference materials (as in stuff you can look up but not take out of the library) but I believe you DO need it (and not the regular NY Public Library card) to check out books or CDs from that particular branch. And, like I said, you need it if you want to watch restricted plays and musicals.

Bernadette: Um.. it sort of grew out of my head like this.

Well I saw the articles about 2 years ago and I didn't have to go through all of that. But I've watched the Broadway videos and other performing arts videos and I didn't have to apply for a card either so it sounds like things have changed a bit. But I'm going to guess that you probably don't need to go through all of that to see the articles.

It's been a while but it seems I looked up her name in a card catalog and wrote down the reference numbers for the two files on her and gave them to a library worker and they brought me the files. I think there were two files and maybe a third with a few pictures. There were tons and tons of old clippings. I read them for at least an hour and never had a chance to finish. I've always meant to go back and finish. I was definitely not allowed to take these articles out of the library. They were very much reference materials and I had to stay in the reference area.

I hope that helps.

Brings back memories. I remember going there over thirty years ago when I was a teen-ager on a trip to New York. At the time I was a Liza Minnelli fanatic and I spent several hours photocopying every article they had in her files. It was great because they had all kinds of obscure little articles from local New York papers going back to the early sixties that I otherwise never would have seen. It was especially a thrill because in those days before the internet and ebay, it was much harder to access older information and periodicals, so this was like a treasure trove.
