| posted: 9/25/2003 at 11:03:40 PM ET Well that was a fairly amusing interview. I forgot how very bizarre the David Letterman show was when it was on after Carson. Very Quirky. Which was just about perfect for Bernadette to walk out and announce first thing that she was premenstral.
It was kind of funny that they mentioned the Tony nomination but it was before the Tonys so she wasn't a winner yet. The reading of the article was amusing and did you here the line "It was in the Post, so you know it is true". (Said with a great deal of sarcasm). Fairly funny considering Bernadette's recent problem with our favorite Post columnist, Michael Reidel. But that just goes to show you that in 1986, The Post didn't have a very good reputation.

| posted: 9/26/2003 at 1:40:11 PM ET Well let's see. It was done while she was doing Song and Dance. She had been nominated for the Tony but the ceremony had not taken place yet but it is discussed. Scott Wise who was in Song and Dance came with her to the Letterman taping. She makes sure he makes it on camera. Anyone else think maybe they were an item at the time? He is now married to Elizabeth Parkinson of Movin Out but he has always been very easy on the eyes. Seems like Bernadette's type - has she ever dated a blond? LOL
Bernadette announces almost before saying hello that she is premenstral as a warning that she might do something weird. They discuss for several minutes what that means and Dave says "But you certainly don't look bloated". LOL
Then they discuss Song and Dance. She describes the show. The also talk about some of her appearances as a child. When they come back from the commercial break, she reads a very bizarre article from The Post about a Chinese Transvestite (sp?) who fakes a pregnancy. Very bizarre. Then she shows Dave her crown for being named The Ziegfeld Girl that year. She puts it on, discusses how it is adjustable and finally convinces Dave to put the crown on. I think that is about it.
I too thought maybe she was a little nervous but I'm not entirely sure. The Letterman Show was very quirky at that time and she might have just been going with the format. She WAS talking about a million miles a minute during the first segment.

| posted: 9/26/2003 at 1:53:48 PM ET When she and Dave were talking about Bloating and whatnot, she said something like, "I can be very mean, so I thought I would warn you." lol She also said, "Some women would commit murder; but I would never do that." hahaha it was very funny.
And when she was talking about when she was on tv as a child, she said she really didn't like other children in show business because they always had these "painted smiles" on their faces, and she didn't see any reason to smile if she didn't feel like it. Funny considering that she works with so many show biz kids now in Gypsy. I'm sure her feelings as an adult are different than they were when she was a child though. But I can totally picture her as a little girl just giving these nasty looks to other kids that had a pushy stage presence.

| posted: 9/26/2003 at 1:59:10 PM ET Actually I still think she finds obnoxious show biz kids to be ... well, obnoxious. Who doesn't. She has spoken about it at other times. Baby June and Dainty June are perfect examples. They are always "On" with fake smiles on their faces. You always feel like they are on stage even when they are not and probably should just be acting like kids at the time.
I don't think Bernadette was making a derogatory comment on all children in show business and all the kids in Gypsy may be very down to earth, real kids who know when and when not to be "on".
Thanks for the additional information, Christine. I'm terrible at remembering these things. But you remembered a lot of funny moments I had not.

| posted: 9/26/2003 at 2:23:54 PM ET I guess I've just never met an "Obnoxious" show business kid. I mean, the characters of Baby June and Dainty June are exactly what that would be, but the children in Gypsy and the ones that were in Annie Get Your Gun are all very down-to-earth children. Very sweet and appreciative of what they get to do every day.
I know you're not saying that the children Bernadette has worked with are like that moljul, but I just wanted to clarify for anyone reading this board that nobody here is referring to those children in any way.

| posted: 9/26/2003 at 2:39:54 PM ET Oh, No definitely not. I think that child actors these days do not, as a group, act like the child actors of Bernadette's childhood or before. Parents and the children's agents are maybe getting wise to the fact that no one wants the child to be on all the time because it is bad for the child and annoying for the adults to be around. It seems their careers don't completely overwhelm their lives like say Judy Garland or Jay North's careers did.
