So, I downloaded "Bernadette" singing Send in the Clowns...guess what? Wasn't her! Aauuuggh!!! I just don't get it, what's the point of having mislabled song files?! Makes me a little mad, but they're good showtunes nontheless, so all is not lost, I suppose.
Hey um, does anyone have the lyrics to Making Love Alone? There's just sometimes when I can't understand what she's saying. I've been net searching, but to no avail.
Could use some help. Thanks in advance!
Also, does anyone know what she's referring to at the beginning of the track?:
"A number of years ago-"
(shout from audience member)
"Ahahaha (laughter)...Y'know, your past catches up with you sometimes." -followed by audience laughter.
Ya, what is she laughing at anyway? Anyone know?

From: MN | posted: 7/2/2001 at 9:15:23 PM ET Hi Sera,
Um...I can't really help u on the lyrics..I can't understand what she's singing sometimes but she's a beautiful singer so it's all good....:-D
Yeah, I saw that "Send In The Clowns" thing too...I don't know why people are doing this...they should change it...if people know it's not her singing "On My Own" then why still have it labled as that?
Um...regarding u'r question about what is she singing about on Making Love Alone....I think she's singing about masturbating...just listen to some of the lyrics carefully and it kinda makes sense after a while LOL.

No, I get that "Making Love Alone" is about masturbation...I am over 5 y'know. Um, the part I didn't get was the stuff she says jus before her intro to the song. It's one of those, live concert visual things that you just can't understand in a recording. The part, I will repeat, is said like this:
Bernadette: "A number of years ago..."
(Then there's a pause and a 'whoo!' from an audience member.)
Then, Ms.Peters laughs-- 'ahahaha'
Then, through her coy laughter she says,
Bernadette: "Y'know, your past catches up with you sometimes."
...And then she proceeds with the intro.
-It's that part I don't get; I wanna know why the audience member caught her attention and of what she is referring when she says "y'know, your past catches up with you sometimes".
It just really makes me curious. Listen to the beginning of the track and you'll know what I mean.
Please, if you know, will somebody let me in on it?
Thanks,
SERA

From: Regina, SK, Canada | posted: 7/9/2001 at 1:22:47 AM ET Hey, I actually found the lyrics to Making Love Alone! There's a great list at the Bernadette Peters "They Say She's Wonderful" site. Although, when I tried to visit the site again today, it wouldn't load for some reason. Aw well. Just thought I'd let y'all know!

From: Hawaii | posted: 7/10/2001 at 1:41:25 PM ET hey guys, just in case anyone else tried to get the lyrics and couldn't get in, here they are:
a log thrown on the fire, two profiles met as one, the igniting of desire in the air, but when there's just one profile, and yet desire grows, despite the fact there's no one else to care.
must romance be abandoned
as it's fanning it's own flame?
waiting to burst full-blown.
there's a special kind of bliss, not engendered with a kiss. syruptitiously indulged in less well known. for when one cannot make love with another, one can still make love alone.
there's a certain special magic to the touch of your own hand. and a special thrill knowing that you will for sure soon be feeling grand. and the tender smell of rapture, you don't have to try to postpone, that's what it's like when your making love alone...
oh the sweet sound of your own breathing, as the sky turn pale pink to hot, and the special thrill knowing that you will not catch god only knows what. it's the kind of glove that fits hand in glove, and burst like a bud full blown. that's what it's like when you're making love alone.
who can describe the special sweetness of knowing the speed that your going is right, and is there anything as thrilling as trying to keep the book open to page 24 all night.
how reassuring to know when it's finally time to go that you'll still be there when you leave, and is dawn is forbreaking you hear yourself making a date for New Years Eve.
it's the kind of love that fits hand in glove, especially when the glove is your own! for the date when you can see their faces, the one who knows all the best places, who'll never ask your sign on the phone, no no no signs, due the simple magic of making love, not taking, faking, mistaking love, the simple magic of making love alone, save on cologne! that's what its loke when you're making love alone, oh, alone...
that's the lyrics. i also have all the lyrics from the rest of the "sondheim, etc." CD and "i'll be your baby tonight" and "into the woods" if you want any of them.

From: Maryland | posted: 7/10/2004 at 11:59:58 AM ET First of all, the question you had about the laughing...She's laughing because someone in the audience pretty much went "WOO!" when she said "A number of years ago" - like he was excited about that. Completely unexpected and rather bizarre.
You could try downloading a copy...or a more legal method - go to used CD stores, Ebay, etc. It's weird because I got my CD way after they had taken Making Love Alone off of the CD, and mine still had the song on it. But you should definitely be able to find a cheap copy, maybe slightly used, somewhere.

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 7/10/2004 at 12:06:09 PM ET Wow, futuremamarose, you really dug up an old thread. There are still plenty of used copies around of the original CD with "Making Love Alone" as track 4. If you check stores or websites that sell used CDs, you should be able to find it. I still don't get the whole "rights" thing that prevents the song from being available anymore. What's the point of writing a good song, and then not letting anyone hear it? So frustrating!

From: Ohio | posted: 7/12/2004 at 7:22:14 PM ET She actually did sing Send in the Clowns YEARS ago on what I believe was the Sonny and Cher show. I have the video of her doing it. It's pretty good. But it's def. not the one on the net.

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 7/12/2004 at 8:39:28 PM ET In more recent years, Bernadette has sung Send in the Clowns at several Sondheim tribute things, with him accompanying her on piano. I really wish she would record it though.
The Sonny and Cher production number was really pretty bizarre, wasn't it? The way they put it together with Cole Porter's Be a Clown, and had her doing that fantasy mime thing. I'm sure the director thought he was being very creative and imaginative, but actually, it just looked weird. Also, when I watch that tape, I always notice how extremely emotional Bernadette is at the end. She literally looks distraught--much more so than usual. It's almost disconcerting (to me).

| posted: 7/14/2004 at 12:59:24 PM ET I agree about the Sonny & Cher show clip. It is really quite bizarre. By some accounts, Bernadette's experiences in Los Angeles TV world were not too pleasant; they were basically jobs that she took to pay the bills and to get public exposure. It must have been an odd fit. When I see some of those old clips (and the Send In the Clowns one is a good example) I wonder if these might have been really, really tough gigs for her.
