OK, so Arthur Laurents didn't neccessarily not like Bette Milder, he didn't like the entire TV production.
She is very talented. I'm sure that a good director (like Sam Mendes) can get the right performance out of Bette. If she was afraid of the role, that's not completely her fault. Just my opinion.
I think she's one of the few women that would be pretty well accepted in the role; considering she would be taking over for one of the biggest names on Broadway.

No, it was just something I heard (and I do mean heard...I didn't read it in any magazine, newspaper, or internet related thing). I don't know if it's true. I certainly wouldn't mind it being true. If anyone has to take over after Bernadette leaves I would like it to be Bette Midler.

WOW, this is a volatile issue. All I can add to this at this point, is to reiterate that 6 months is a long time when you are performing a role of this magnitude 8 times per week--and therefore I don't find it all that unusual for her to be taking a week off at the 6 month-mark. I just can't help but find it disturbing that only Bernadette's attendance, vacations, and projected run in GYPSY seems to get so much attention, and so much speculation, apart from our fan discussions here. So many people seem to be speculating, and inecssantly worrying and predicting that she will leave early...and despite the great opinions and inteliigent comments, I don't think we have anything to worry about. She is in great shape. As I stated months ago, it seems that an incredible amount of undue pressure has been placed on Bernadette. Back when RAGTIME was in the early part of its run, I saw the show THREE times over a span of a few months, and Marin Mazzie, who played Mother, was absent all 3 times. There have been times when one-third of an entire cast has been absent due to a bug going around. Unless a big star is going to fill in for a star, such as Liza Minnelli's stint replacing Julie Andrews in Victor/Victoria, vacations are not announced far in advance. For this to be announced more than 25 days beforehand does not seem premature or sudden to me at ALL. As for the Bette Midler rumor, I find that to be about as likely to happen as Barbra Streisand taking over! Bette would never repeat her film performance on the stage. Her fothcoming world tour is to be a big one, and will keep her out on the road for he better part of a year. That will NOT happen--and I wish i could put a large sum of money on it, because I could use it to buy more GYPSY tickets for 2004!!!!

I get what you're saying Rob, but I think the reason this subject seems to be the issue of the day is because information in general (rumors, news, what have you) is so easily accessible now. When an actor gets sick, it's on the internet five minutes later. When one of us goes to see the show, half an hour later we're online and telling everyone what we saw and heard, and within minutes any important info is transferred to other people, and more people, and other boards, and so on and so forth. Because of this, people are expected to know WAAAAYYY in advance when a star is out, and are outraged when they don't. We're spoiled, basically. We expect to be told about vacations, illnesses, etc, because usually, even if it isn't on playbill, someone on the internet knows anyway. So if all of us know a month in advance that Bernadette's going to be out, or even a week in advance, it also hurts the theatre financially. It gives us time to NOT buy our tickets, or to return our tickets (as opposed to showing up at the theatre that day and maybe deciding to see the show anyway.)

Investors KNOW this about the public. This is why Bernadette taking any sort of vacation or getting sick is a HUGE deal. It's not like back in the day, when she could get sick and only diehard theatre fans planning to see the show that week knew about it. Anytime Bernadette is gone, playbill reports it, and the theatre loses money because people have a bit of notice to return their tickets. So all this talk becomes publicized because not only do we have access to it, but the fact that we DO have access to it scares the crap out of the investors that want us to see the show. So it THEN becomes an even BIGGER deal, which ends up all over the net. Chain reaction, see?

Regis: And look at all this hair. My God. That's a lot of hair. Look at this. How does hair get this way?
Bernadette: Um.. it sort of grew out of my head like this.

I'm with you, RobRamos. The Andrew Gans vacation story had the operative word "scheduled" in it, as in "will take a scheduled vacation." Granted, this was likely from a press release, but it was an important word to put in just because of such speculation.

What I gleaned from reading about this rumor was that the "source" was someone overhearing a conversation outside Bernadette's dressing room. I couldn't help thinking, 'Here's this consummate pro talking to producers about getting out of her contract in her dressing room...aaaannnnd with the door open?!?
I don't think sooooo.

I know what an emotional effect this performance has on me and I'm sitting comfortably in my seat, so I can only imagine the energy and, jeepers, the emotional energy to pull out and repeat those emotions eight times a week so that each audience feels like she's going through it all for the first time in front of them. And that's before you get to how taxing the songs are on the voicebox.

It's interesting to speculate, but I come away from such threads, asking, 'These are the people who love her?' I guess it's just disconcerting to me because one of the reasons I latched on to this show and this performer after the first viewing was that people said she couldn't do Mama Rose. Well, this people's got it... I think she can do anything, including a year in this role.

And I too don't get why she's singled out for missing a performance. Jealousy is all I can come up with, and people who desperately want to say, 'I told you so.'

I'd like to see Lorna do it when Bernadette's contract expires.

Maybe some people are considering the possibility of Bernadette leaving early just to prepare themselves psychologically just *in case* that should happen. Not that they want it to or think that it will, but if somehow it does, then they've prepared themselves mentally and it wouldn't be as big a shock or disappointment. I don't know--this is pure speculation on possible motives.

SingOutAnnie I love what you said! Especially at the end, and I think you're absolutely right! I couldn't have said it better myself.
For anybody who didn't read it, this is what it said:
