Broadway on Broadway is a free concert in Times Square, and it's held every year to officially kick off the new Broadway season in September. This year, Broadway on Broadway is on September 7th (which is today, actually) and I believe it is in the morning, at 11am. From what I've been told, it is exceedingly crowded. I also believe one of the local stations airs it (or portions of it) so if you're in the NY area you could probably just catch it on TV. Sorry to have not responded sooner.

If you're looking to go to a free Broadway event, your best bet is probably the Broadway Flea Market, which is at the end of the month. There aren't any performances at that, but it's less crowded, so you might have more fun (I can't imagine how much fun a person can have craning their necks to try and get a view of the stage in a sea of 25,000 people.)

And if you need any more info, you can always try this link:

www.playbill.com

Their info is generally always accurate. Also, if you ever get tickets to Gypsy, Playbill will report when Bernadette is out sick, and when she'll be scheduled to return. (I've found that most of the time, Playbill gives me better info than the people at the theatre. At least, when I was there in May -- when Bernadette was sick, and I asked at the theatre -- Playbill knew more than they did.)

Regis: And look at all this hair. My God. That's a lot of hair. Look at this. How does hair get this way?
Bernadette: Um.. it sort of grew out of my head like this.
