Just in case anyone is interested- there will be a pet bed made out of the material used for the costumes for Gypsy and signed by the whole cast up for auction tomorrow.

I wish I had that kind of money. Hopefully someone will be kind enough to donate to this wonderful cause. Any idea what else they have up for bid?

Thanks Kevin for taking all those pictures and posting them so quickly for those of us out in the hinterlands.

Was that the same greyhound from Regis? Hopefully lots of animals will find homes as a result of today.

Great to see so many stars supporting the event. According to Tom Viola, ED of BC/EFA, Broadway Barks gets more celebrities involved than anything else BC does. Here's the link to the article. http://www.petgaz.net/html/b.html#3

Thanks much, PTM, for pointing to the Manhattan Pet Gazette.

After much messing around, I finally got a copy of the article about Bernadette in readable form onto my computer (that Adobe program is not very easy for me to work with). Here's the article:

"Known and appreciated for her theatrical accomplishments,Bernadette Peters is also applying her talent and celebrity to helping shelter animals find new homes. Each summer she hosts “Broadway Barks”, an annual event held in Schubert [sic] Alley where Broadway stars and shelter volunteers work together to promote the adoption of animals.
When asked about how Broadway Barks was started, Ms.Peters told us that the idea came about from a discussion she had with Richard Hester four years ago, who was then her stage manager for “Annie Get Your Gun”. She decided to join forces with Mr. Hester, who was already active in various shelter causes, to
create “Broadway Barks”. Ever since then, the event has continued to grow. With more than twenty animal shelters and numerous celebrities, this last summer’s “Broadway Barks”
showcased many adorable cats and dogs in need of new families. After careful screening, many animals were successfully adopted.
The issue of homeless animals is very close to Ms. Peters’ heart since both her dogs, Stella 4 and Kramer 5, were adopted from
nearby shelters. Ms. Peters proudly states that Stella and Kramer are part of her family. “They are healing to be around and without them there would be a large void.” Even though she
has a very busy singing/acting career, Ms. Peters says that she
makes time to fit Stella and Kramer into her schedule.
So if you’re thinking of getting a furry friend to bring home, don’t let your busy schedule stop you. Dog walkers, sitters, and scores of other resources are available in the city to help you care for your
adoptee. There are many wonderful pets waiting to be adopted at the shelters in and around New York City. Pictured throughout
the Manhattan Pet Gazette are animals that are still waiting for that perfect family. How can you resist? Don’t forget to support our Person of the Month. Get tickets to Ms. Peters’ upcoming Broadway musical, “Gypsy”, due out in April. Congratulations, Ms.Peters, for being involved in such a worthy cause!"

Thanks for posting those pics so quickly Kevin. Did you happen to catch any shows while in NY? I know you try to whenever you're there; just wondering if you saw Gypsy or something.

PTM, yes, that was the same Greyhound from Regis. She was there as an example of the dogs they have, but they did say she was already adopted. Christine Ebersole was there; but not as one of the celebrities on stage. She ended up adopting one of the dogs right on the spot.

Berndette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore did a great job hosting the event yesterday. I love when they host together because they're both so funny. I thought it was funny when Mary accidentely read Bernadette's card, so she told Bernadette to read hers...Bernadette said, "Bernadette and I have been involved..." LOL I also found it so funny when the little black and white dog named Andrea was lying down, and Bernadette said, "Andrea! That's a great name...for a dog." LOL Sort of insulting to anyone named Andrea, but it was funny.

They informed us that Patty (Bernadette's assistant) and the cast of Gypsy raised over $50,000 for Broadway Barks at the stage door alone. I think that is so wonderful.

Bernadette did come out during the intermission of Gypsy (she was still in costume), but I don't think many people noticed....she wasn't out there very long. The children in Gypsy were helping out a lot yesterday as far as bringing the animals on stage, and they've also helped a great deal in raising money for the cause. Also, the animals in Gypsy did their share of helping. Coco the Dog and Jack the Lamb posed for pictures with people for $5 each (with your own camera) and $10 each (with their camera). They were so adorable.

There was actually one dog (as if I din't want to take all of them home...they were all so great) that I might end up adopting. There were a couple of other people interested in her too, so we'll see what happens. As long as they find good homes (even if it's not mine), I'm happy.

For those of you who have been to Broadway Barks in past years, you may remember a Golden Retreiver named Bear...he was a rescue dog. Well sadly, Bear passed away His son was there though (which is how I found out Bear died...I confused the 2 dogs and asked the fireman if that was bear and he said that it was Bear's son, and that Bear had passed away); but he was pleased that I remembered the dog. Bear's son is also a rescue dog...and very sweet.

Another dog that passed on is Picaso. He was the dog that had a face deformation. I believe he died from a liver disease. Their is a fund being set up in Picaso's memory.

And just one more note (I'm sorry this post is so long). On Saturday, July 26th in Central Park there is the annual ADOPT-A-THON. Every Shelter from NYC will be there with a lot of great Dogs and Cats that need good homes. If you or someone you know is interested in adopting an animal, please go check this out. Bring your families; it should be a beautiful day in the park. Even if you don't intend to adopt an animal, go and have a good time and donate to the shelters.

Thanks for the great re-cap Christine. And $50,000! That's a fantastic chunk of change for them to raise at the stage door.

So Christine Ebersole adopted a dog too. How cute. Is it any of the ones pictured? A few months ago, Vanessa Williams was on the cover of a magazine distributed by the Vet Hospital I take my dog to with the pair she adopted from last year's event.

Thanks for the info on the greyhound. When I saw her in the picture, I was worried that maybe she hadn't found a home. I like that little one in the picture labeled BP & MTM 4. Looks like a good size pal for my dog. If only I was allowed to have two where I live.

Yeah, I beleive it was a Chihuahua/Pomeranian mix. It was really cute. I took a pic. When I get the film developed I'll post it.

Broadway Barks really does do a great job in helping to raise money for shelters and getting the animals adopted.

One thing I thought was odd (on the shelters' part...not on Broadway Barks' part) is that I saw 2 different celebrities (actually, Christine was the only celebrity...the other person is in a high-profiled show, but not necessarily as famous) walk off that day having adopted dogs, and yet non-celebrity people have to fill out applications and be approved by the shelters. I think the application process and background check is a good idea, but it should be followed through for everybody. It's like how famous people can adopt children (hello...Rosie O'Donnell with three perfectly healthy, caucasion children) so easily, and yet some people have to wait for years.
But, as long as the dogs are going to good people and good homes, that's all that matters.

EVERYONE who adopts a dog hasd to fill out an application -including celebrities. While it is very unusual for people to take home animals that day- if the application can be reviewd and references checked- then under certain circumstances a person might be able to take a pet home that day. She may also have been in contact with the shelter before the event. These groups work very hard for their animals- they don't let them go to a home unless they are quite certain it will be a good one.

That's true. I didn't mean for it to sound like the shelters don't do a thorough check on everyone that adopts, I was just surprised by the person from the particular show I was talking about being able to take the dog that day.

I believe Christine Ebersole had actualy been wanting that dog for a while. She was trying to get Linda Hart's attention on the stage to tell her that she had adopted the dog; perhaps the other person had done the same.

Like I said, as long as they go to good homes. I know the people at the shelters only want the very best for the animals.

Christine-
I'd like to address your comment about adoption (in a friendly way).

The reason Rosie O'Donnell was able to adopt those children faster than other people is because of several reasons, and not because she jumped ahead of anyone or because rules were relaxed for her.

I don't know the entire specifics of her children's adoptions,of course, but she was probably able to work with different adoption lawyers or different adoption agencies (she has residency in Florida as well as NY). That opens up a larger pool of available children. If you are only able to work with just one lawyer, then there are less children available. Each state sets their adoption laws.

Healthy Caucasian children available for adoption are far and few between. Many single women choose to keep their babies rather than relinquish them. Healthy Caucasian babies are also less likely to be put into CPS custody.

Regardless of how many lawyers and agencies with which Rosie O'Donnell could work, she still had to go through the paperwork, the home visits, the background checks, etc. I know she waited at least one year-probably more- for her first son (because she was doing the paperwork and home visits during that time). She had to do this regardless from which state the children were adopted.

She also had,at one time,a little Latina child named Mia in her care, and very much wanted to adopt her,and did as much as she could to help her. However,a little girl so badly hurt as Mia is difficult for anyone to parent, and she really needed intensive therapeutic care and later adopted by a family in which she was the only child. I do know that Rosie keeps in contact with Mia,and that Mia is doing well in her new home.

Regardless-Rosie would not have been able to adopt Mia because of Florida's law denying homosexuals the opportunity to adopt children. Florida has no ban on homosexuals fostering children, but they can't adopt them (as of now-the law may change). Mia was under Florida law,and Rosie was already with Kelli,so she did not want to lie on the adoption casework about her relationship (Rosie's first two children were adopted before Rosie and Kelli met,and they adopted Blake-the third child- together).

I'm not saying that Rosie O'Donnell is the perfect adoption spokesperson-some of the things she's said about open adoption (and truthfully,I don't think she intended those comments the way they sounded) I didn't care for,but she's helped create many families through her organization (and most are not celebrities).

Okay-I've gone on long enough. But I'm close to the adoption community,so I don't let opportunities like this pass me by. I don't mean to criticize or lecture you-just wanted to put out another point of view. :-)

Jenn

Rosie's son Blake is not white, I believe he is of Mexican descent, so really she only has two white kids.

Anyways, who cares what color the kids are? I think if someone who is trying to adopt has the audacity to completely refuse a perfectly healthy child because they are not white is really missing the whole point of adoption.

By the way, some friends of my family just adopted a little girl from Poland. People are always so hung up on the issue of not many white children being available, but if you look at international options, there really are tons of kids who are in desperate need of a good home. It just takes more work on the parents part.

Actually, her son, Blake, is not Mexican..not that it matters but your info is not correct. Rosie describes Blake as " half Italian, half hodge-podge". I really do think Rosie has a very big heart and regardless of how she got her kids( as long as it wasn't illegal) then does it matter?? But yeah, I think its quite obvious that Rosie doesn't care about the race of her children( hence, everything she went through with Mia)

A lot of people these days adopt outside of the US #1 because its harder finding kids up for adoption here and #2 all the legal troubles #3 in fear that the mother might want him/her back and can in the US

Some very good friends of mine adopted a little girl from China about 5 years ago. Adopting a baby from another country is not as easy as you think. You have to do all their (the other countries) legal stuff. Fly over there to bring the baby home with you. Plus, many of the orphanages in other countries are not so nice. My friend's daughter still (at age 7) has nightmares about the orphanage she was in and she was adopted when she was about 16 or 17 months old...so that says a lot right there.
