From: New York City | posted: 7/6/2003 at 12:59:39 AM ET I think.... the first time you watch SINPWG that you're expecting more. More plot, more romance (between the two main characters) more humor, just... more. So I think the initial concept (that passion and art ARE the plot) makes the play seem either slow or hard to understand the first time around.
But the second time you sit down to watch it, since you know what's going to happen and what to expect, you turn your attention to detail: lyrics, theme, intensity of character, etc. Honestly, I think you don't get much out of the play until you see it the second time. I mean, while I enjoyed it the first time, I wasn't really sure WHY I enjoyed it. Just that I did enjoy it, but it wasn't my favorite musical.
Truly, the second time around, was when I could appreciate what everything in the play was saying. And also, in this way, I was able to appreciate the performances of the two principals more. All around, 'Sunday' is a fantastic musical. It's just one of those "you have to see it twice" musicals.
But you know, this is a good thing, because (I think) you get something new out of the material every time you watch it.

| posted: 7/6/2003 at 9:49:35 PM ET I had no trouble following it the frst time I watched it. At the time I happened to be studying George Serat in my Senior art class, so I was very interested to see the story (even if it wasn't completely accurate in historic details).
I didn't like the second act though. I thought it was so completely different from the first, even though they were tied together. I would have liked it better as just a story set in the time of Serat...leaving out the Great Grandson or whoever trying to do some museum exhibition.
We could have a better chance to focus on one set of characters in two acts than two sets of characters in two acts.

Registered: 6/26/2003 | posted: 7/6/2003 at 10:54:09 PM ET I LOVE Sunday. Actually it was Bernadette's performances on the '86 Tonys followed a week or so later watching her on TV in SITPWG that really turned me onto Sondheim and into the Bernadette fan that I am today.
I've always found the second act very moving, with the modern George's attempt to connect to something -- his art, the past, his family and Dot coming back and singing Move On.
I was lucky enough to see the 10th annivesary concert and you can really tell how strong a show is when it can thrill and move you with the cast basically standing there with "only" the book and score.

From: Pennsylvania | posted: 7/7/2003 at 10:51:02 AM ET Sunday is an amazing show, I watched it for the first time this year in my musical theatre class and fell in love with it. I think it is one of my favorite Bernadette perfomances ever. My director decided to do Sunday as our fall musical this coming November so I am very excited to be a part of it.

| posted: 7/8/2003 at 8:12:20 PM ET Oh my goodness, YES! She is definitely on the video. And if you go to rent it, try to get the DVD because there is an audio commentary by Sondheim, Lapine, Patinkin and Bernadette. Though if you have never seen the show before, definitely watch it without the commentary first so you know what they are talking about.
