Hi everyone -- I'm another "lurker." Living in Minnesota, I haven't been able to see Gypsy ... yet. So I really haven't had anything to say -- until now! I'm a huge classic movie buff and I just noticed that, in my opinion, Bernadette bears a striking resemblance to Myrna Loy (of the Thin Man series) -- not necessarily just the way she looks, but her mannerisms and facial expressions (I can't really describe it). What do the rest of you think? Am I nuts? Just curious....

Similar mouths, but Myrna's was not as pouty. Heavyset eyes-so I can see the similarities.

I like silent movies,too. :-)

Myrna Loy also had a great heart and a powerful work ethic. She was very brave to publicly oppose the Un-American hearings and worked hard against discriminatory housing practices. One of the fortunate few who survived the introduction of "talkies."

It is so funny that someone posted something like this, because when I was a kid and saw 'History of the World' for the first time, I thought Madeleine Kahn was Bernadette Peters. She was wearing a large, curly-haired wig, and has that higher-pitched, sort of little girl-ish voice, and I swear to god, for years I thought, in that movie, she was Bernadette Peters. I kept mixing them up. But it's a compliment, really it is, because Madeleine Kahn was obscenely talented.

To add to my last comment, here's a picture page of Madeline Kahn:
http://hometown.aol.com/jipcmoon/mkphotosindex.html

Compare these to the picture that appears in the upper right hand corner of Bernadette's online photo archive (link below)

Early Bernadette Peters resembles Madeline Kahn. Plus... both actresses had the incredible comedic timing, and singing voices. I swear, I mixed them up all the time when I was a kid.

I think Madeline and Bernadette once appeared on a talk show together and commented on getting mistaken for each other. Her part in "Silent Movie" is typical of Madeline's parts in Mel Brooks movies and I think may have originally been intended for Madeline. (This is all foggy and vauge stuff in the back of my head... may be complete crap.)

There's a picture of Bernadette's mother that was shown on the "Sunday Morning" piece that definitely looks a lot like Myrna Loy.

CaitlinSD,
It's nice to see your post. I use to go to your page of people site a while back when we all use to post over on Melinda's site. My friends all know what a BP fan I am and they always call me when a Madeline Kahn movie is on thinking that she is Bernadette. I always have to set them straight! I think a lot of people mistake the two (especially since they both were in a lot of successful comedies in the early 70's and 80's).

Madeline and Bernadette did the "Anyone Can Whistle" special together....even though they didn't sing together.

Madeline Kahn is one of my favorite actresses/singers. I cried when she passed away. She was so young; it was such a shame. My two favorite Madeline Kahn movies are: "What's Up Doc?" and "Mixed Nuts."

Bernadette's mother definitely looks more like Myrna than Bernadette does...but, Bernadette looks very much like her mother, and thereby looks somewhat like Myrna; but I wouldn't call it a striking resemblance.

Actually they did sing together in the song "There's Always a Woman."

I was lucky enough to attend that event. What a night! Unfortunately, I don't think the recording was well engineered or something and was not able to capture the excitement and thrill of that concert, but live, wow!

Peters and Bakula had great chemistry that was palpable even in the cheap seats. The person I went with and other people I heard from actually thought there was something going on between those two. (Anybody think Bakula could play Herbie?)

I think Kahn comes off better on the recording than she did live because of her more laid back approach. Peters, on the other hand, sang to the back row of the balcony and boy did the audience respond. The concert was going along nicely and the audience was wildly enthusiastic but it seemed more like they were trying to turn the concert into one of those unforgettable nights. But then Peters made her appearance and delivered "There Won't Be Trumpet." The audience exploded for real and wouldn't stop clapping til she came back out on stage. Same thing happened after she sang "Anyone Can Whistle." It was soooo moving.

In the beginning, it seemed to me that the audience gave a louder hand to Kahn when she first appeared than Peters (or maybe they just didn't all recognize Peters when she walked out with her hair piled up) but at the end it seemed like Kahn didn't want to take a solo bow. I wondered if it was because she was afraid of how much bigger Peters' ovation would be compared to hers.

Before the concert there was talk that the concert might be taped for Great Performances or something. Too bad it wasn't.
