Why doesn't anyone talk about how horrendous Tammy is in this show? I have seen it twice. The girl has no energy whatsoever, no electricity, and can barely sing. Bernadette gives every performance 200 percent, whereas Tammy gives it maybe 20. She does not deserve to be on that stage with Bernadette, and I don't understand what Mendes, etc were thinking when they cast her. Certainly there are many, many actresses out there who can do a much better job.

I really have no idea what you're talking abut...I think Tammy is fabulous in the show. Apparently many others agree since she was nominated for a Theatre World Award..and WON.And was nominated for a TONY...not bad for her first Broadway show. She's very consistant with her acting. Her voice has improved greatly since she began. She can dance. I personally think she plays very well off of Bernadette and has great chemistry with her. Oh well, I guess we can't blame the blind for not knowing talent when they see it....
I understand this is your opinion...I just don't agree with it.

Are you sure that you saw the show?

The character of Louise is supposed to be on a journey of self awareness and acceptance. It is extremely important that Louise does not jump up and down on the stage (Thus we have June for that).

Tammy transforms amazingly into Gypsy and it is that transformation that ultimately brings out her 200 percent. If the audience were to experience the star quality of the Louise character anytime before Tammy revealed it (which she does superbly) then the entire second would be pointless.

I recommend that Anonymous goes see the show again and focus on Tammy throughout all aspects she is on stage and you will see the slow transformation that ultimately erupts into a monster of self recognition.

Opinions vary, yes. But you just had me falling off my chair laughing when you said that the blind don't know talent when they see it. You have no idea who I am, and I won't tell you because I don't want to identify myself, but I am a very successful person in the entertainment industry, who undoubtedly knows how to spot talent way better than you do.

Alrighty, then I apologize for saying that. But just like music...the talent of a performer is subjective. I mean to a degree. I happen to think Tammy is excellent in the show. Fact is: she can act, she can sing and she can dance. And quite obviously many other SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE IN THE INDUSTRY agree. Like another poster stated, her role does not require her to be up there bouncing around on stage. Louise is supposed to be somewhat subdued.Btw,please don't presume to know what I do or do not know about talent or this industry.

I have to agree that talent is subjective. I have on many occasions believed that someone is not very talented but everyone else disagrees. I don't think that Anonymous is saying that Tammy is not talented, I think He/She feels that Tammy was miscast in the role. Am I correct?

Though I do disagree with your opinion, I do respect that you have one and the fact you went back a second time before posting here. I do still support my recommendation that you give it another shot and try to focus on just Tammy and I think you might reconsider. If I am wrong then I am wrong.

Respectfully,

Keith

I think Tammy is great in Gypsy. She's a very sweet person and a good actress. What, did you try out for the role of Louise and get turned down or something? You can have your opinions of Tammy, but you don't have to make those who like her seem like they don't know anything just because they don't work in the entertainment industry (which actually, I did for 2 years until I went back to school).

This just further proves my point that there is one or two anonymous people who just come here to cause arguments.

I saw Tammy in the Judy Garland TV movie and thought she was mesmerizing, so it's not that I'm saying she isn't talented. I'm thinking that maybe she needs lots of takes to get a performance right, and just isn't a theater actress. By the way, lots of people agree with me. There was a whole conversation at the William Morris agency between the agents, who all agreed that Tammy is horrible in "Gypsy." And no, I did NOT try out for Louise. I'm a writer, not an actress.
The reason I'm so adamant about my opinion is that I really felt that I, as a theatergoer, was cheated out of the full experience of what "Gypsy" should be because of Tammy's performance. And, as I said, I saw the show twice, and she was bad both times.

Anonymous, when did you see the show approximately? I'm just curious where in the run you are talking about.

Well, there are other actresses who I thought would be great in the role of Louise had Tammy not been chosen (though I'm happy that Tammy was chosen). I still think Anne Hathaway would be great in the role should Tammy decide to leave after her contract runs out or something.

Since you clearly don't think Tammy is right for the part, who would you have picked?

I think Tammy is amazing! I didn't see her in the Judy Garland Movie. In fact, I haven't see her in anything previously but, she knocked my socks off! Her character development is excellent. She does an wonderful job transforming from a shy, insecure girl to a confident, secure woman. Her singing and acting both make the transition and it's exciting to watch. I love how the character ends up picking up a lot of Rose's traits towards the end. She pulls it off beautifully and I could feel the pain, the disappointment, and then the excitement she experienced along the way as her character developed. Her facial expressions, her reactions to her mother said a lot even when she was not speaking. I thought she was brilliant!

Moljul: I saw it in previews, then again on June 16th.

I think Anne Hathaway is a wonderful choice.

Just wondering as I feel Tammy has developed the character a great deal during its run. She was not nearly as strong now as she was earlier. But obviously you are basing your opinion on a recent viewing. I think the portrayal I have seen in the last couple of weeks is quite thrilling and very true to the character of Louise. My opinion.

Anne Hathaway seems too young to me. Maybe in a few years.

Actually, Anne's not too young, but I understand where you're coming from -- since she played a 15-year-old in "The Princess Diaries." But I happen to know Anne, and although she's only 20, she comes across as older in person. She's tall and very intelligent, which makes her read older. I wonder if she auditioned for this show? I'll have to ask her.

Please do ask her. I have had this discussion with others who thought she was perfect for the role. I thought she was closer to 23 years old?
I always thought she looked the part, and I knew she could act...but when I heard her sing on the Caroline Rhea Show with Chip Zien, she blew me away. That's when I thought she would be the perfect Gypsy.
