For curiosity's sake,I went to the Tony Awards website (http://www.tonyawards.com) and took a peek at the archives to see which awards the original Gypsy production won.

I knew Ethel Merman didn't win (she lost to Mary Martin in The Sound of Music-interesting....),but was astounded at what Gypsy did not win. The Sound of Music swept the musical awards (it tied for Best Musical with Fiorello!).

In fact,Gypsy went home completely awardless that night.

Just a thought. The Sound of Music is great, but interesting to think about the contrast between Maria and Mama Rose!

Not to make light of the mighty Ms. Martin, but I was just struck by the contrast between the two shows. I didn't know they were in the same season-what a fantastic year that must have been. But the roles were really on the opposite ends of the spectrum! I love TSOM,so I'm not putting it down. I just love the contrast between those two ladies-in the same season,no less!

BTW-I'm the mysterious "anonymous" poster in this post. I decided to go ahead and register.

But 1960-that was an amazing season. Mary Martin,Ethel Merman,Sidney Poitier,Carol Burnett,Anne Bancroft,Warren Beatty, and Jane Fonda were all in leading roles. The Miracle Worker,Toys in the Attic, and A Raisin in the Sun were some of the new plays. The new musicals were The Sound of Music,Gypsy,Fiorello!,and Once Upon a Mattress. And The Fantasticks opened off Broadway.

I wonder how much tickets cost. And I'm giggling over what La Merman was thinking as Mary Martin went up to collect her award.

I knew that Merman had lost to Martin, but I was not aware that the original production of Gypsy did not win ANY awards. That may actually help me get through this. Still, shows today depend on Tony Awards more than they did back then.

In any case, a lot of people are saying that even though the show did not win anything, Bernadette's performance at the Tony's was a win; and that will draw people to the show.
