Here are some press comments on the Tonys--enough said!

"The major production blanked at the awards was the revival of "Gypsy," which had four nominations. But the show -- and its leading lady -- had an undeniable moment of triumph in Bernadette Peters' altogether electrifying performance of Rose's Turn."

VARIETY, 6/9/03

"Bernadette Peters, who has suffered from much-publicized vocal problems since the opening of "Gypsy," didn't win for best actress, but got a standing ovation from the cheering Tony audience after her lusty - and beautiful - performance of 'Rose's Turn' from the musical."

New York Newsday, 6/9/03

"Best performance of the night: Bernadette Peters, whose 'Rose's Turn' from Gypsy was 100 percent better than on the opening night of the show and literally raised goosebumps everywhere. Peters got a standing ovation throughout Radio City for a reason: this was her best performance as Mama so far. It's too bad her regular performances haven't been that good. She would have won the Tony easily. As it is, she proved her critics wrong last night. You never know what's going to happen in the world of live television."

Fox News Station, 6/9/03 (Roger Friedman)

[Backstage at the Tonys] "Bernadette Peters dissing the Green Room sandwiches: 'I don't do carbs. Only protein. But I sneak a little chocolate.'"

(How about giving her a Clark bar the next time you see her?--J)

Another Broadway.com's Adam Feldman:

The audience would stand twice more: First for Brian Stokes Mitchell's stirring treatment of Man of La Mancha's "The Quest," and then for Bernadette Peters' magnificently anguished rendition of "Rose's Turn" from Gypsy.

The strength of Peters' performance, one of the high points of recent Tony history, undoubtedly had viewers across the country scratching their heads when the award for Best Actress in a Musical was given to Hairspray's super-bubbly Marissa Jaret Winokur. But the Tonys, with apologies to Michele Pawk, have never been a perfect world. And besides, Peters has two Tonys already, and Winokur's speech was spunk incarnate: "If a four-foot-eleven, chubby New York girl can be a leading lady in a Broadway show, and win a Tony, then anything can happen!" Welcome to Broadway, sister.

This is from today's Backstage:

Bernadette Peters lost the Tony to Marissa Jaret Winokur, but she stopped the show with a socko rendition of "Rose's Turn" from "Gypsy." All eyes were on Peters to see if she would be up to pulling off the difficult solo which sums up the complex emotional state of the selfish stage mother who is left with nothing when both her daughters don't need her anymore. The star had received some nasty press in certain quarters for missing performances and having vocal trouble. She delivered a gut-wrenching performance, hitting all the acting and singing notes. The scene will probably result in a boost at the box office for "Gypsy," despite its no-win Tony status.
