First of all, you are an incredible group of people...generous of heart. I hope Bernadette occasionally comes on to the site and sees your heartfelt words of support. I've especially enjoyed the frequent, and always perceptive, posts of mojul, christine and jeanmd, among all the others.
She is, without a doubt, the finest musical actress we have. Like all of you, I was blown out of my chair by her rendition of "Rose's Turn" on the show last night...and deeply disappointed that she was overlooked.
One thing that particularly bothered me was that Marissa Jaret Winokur did not even acknowledge Bernadette or the other Best Actress nominees in her acceptance speech...as all the other nominees did. The rumor has cirulated that MJW is just a little self-involved. Her speech proved that.
I predict "Gypsy" will still be a sold-out success for months and months to come.
Best to you all.

I also thought that Brian Stokes Mitchell gave the second greatest performance of the evening. I thought Antonio Banderas was good as well.
People did stand for Hairspay, but only a select few. Bernadette's and Brian's performances were the only ones that got EVERYONE in Radio City Music Hall (and me at home lol) up off their seats. That is power.

I mentioned that on Broadwayworld, and I got attacked for saying it! I don't care. I still think Marissa should have ackonwledged her main competitor.

Marissa didn't HAVE to thank Bernadette. It is her moment and she probably had a lot of people to thank in a short time. She had to make some choices. But I agree that the difference between just an acceptance speech and a classy speech would be acknowledging your fellow nominees particulary when you are such a newcomer. Perhaps it was just an oversight of someone new in the business and maybe soon Marissa will learn to keep herself grounded as it will enable her to go much farther in her career. Just my thoughts.

| posted: 6/10/2003 at 12:35:48 PM ET I agree that it is because she is a newcomer, and a first time winner so I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. lol I just couldn't belive how mean that person was on that other board towards me. I clearly stated that it was just my opinion, and they go off telling me to get over it and shut up about it until I win my own Tony.

Registered: 6/9/2003 | posted: 6/10/2003 at 2:40:20 PM ET As for the Tony award, from a marketing point-of-view it was savy to give it to MJW. Peters is a known star and will pull audiences in GYPSY no matter how many awards the how does or doesn't get. GYPSY and Peters performance in it rise to the level of art, and like the great roles in the great operas, they need to be filled by artist who experiemnt and take risks -- which is what Peters does in GYPSY and comes up a winner. (I have seen productions of GYPSY in which the risks fell flat, but I am glad they were taken.)
And like everyone has said, the 1959 GYPSY was also shut out. Unlike The Sound of Music, it has not only survived, but thrived, and grown, as a piece of art.
Of course, great shows getting shut out is also a sign of a bountiful Broadway season!
Anyhow, as I stated before, this production of GYPSY is thrilling and not to be missed!
