I've been reading the original published Gypsy script and for those of you who've seen the show numerous times or just have better recall than I, here's some questions:
In the birthday scene, is Louise ever referred to as "Plug?", does Peters always say "damn monkey ate a piece outta the cake" or "rotten monkey" and is nobody supposed to be over ten or twelve in the act?

I know Mandelbaum said that with the Daly production some lines started to drop out of the script but the ones he mentioned were at the end. And speaking of the end, in the NYT article Laurents said that in the beginning he thought Peters' Rose's Turn was too conservatively staged. Did they make many changes that you guys noticed from the early previews other than giving her a better dress?

I'm pretty sure "Plug" never gets said at all because I remember reading that in the original script too and never hearing it in this production. I think Bernadette says the thing about the monkey. Rose's turn is full of a lot more emotion now.

I've never heard Louise be referred to as "Plug."
Rose always says, "That rotten monkey ate a piece out of the cake."

And she always says, "Stop right there! As long as we have this act, nobody's over ten and you all know it!"

Hmm. I don't recall plug. I think I would remember that one. LOL I believe it is "rotten monkey" not damn. No one is supposed to be over 10. Louise has 10 candles on her cake.

My observed changes other than the dress which in itself made Rose's Turn more provocative and sexy, would be several gestures that Bernadette makes. She also lifts her skirt quite a bit as she is walking back to the wall. The last Monday of previews (when I'm assuming the show was pretty much frozen and actually the first time I saw her in the new dress), she lifted her dress extremely high. She would have entered into a whole other area of stage work had she lifted it much higher. LOL I was a little surprised at first because I wasn't expecting it but it still fit the moment. Rose is a somewhat vulgar woman so it made sense. I've seen the show twice since then, I think and she doesn't lift it quite as high. Maybe she just felt she was going too far. Also when she says "Take at look at these eggrolls, Mr. Goldstone, she pulls the already low neckline of her dress down. She wasn't able to do that with her previous dress because it wouldn't have worked with the neckline. Rose's Turn at the beginning of previews seemed to be more Rose showing she could have had a career in show business. Now it leans more toward Rose showing she could have easily been Gypsy Rose Lee (as opposed to being Dainty June).

Thanks for the responses. The script says "rotten" but I could swear at least at one performance I remember Peters saying "damn" and the original script says " nobody's over twelve" but it now seems to be ten. I think Midler said ten and so did Daly on the tape I heard. I think ten is funnier.

Now every other Rose's "Some People" sounds somewhat plodding in comparison to Peters'. It will be interesting to see the timings on the new recording.

I wonder how Rose's Turn would've played if they had Rose mimick more of Gypsy's final strip during the first part of the number.

You know what, I saw it again recently, and she does say, "damn monkey."
It must have been Bette's movie version where Rose says rotten.

LOL Actually, Bernadette says damn a lot in the show.

LOL I saw it last night and was going to post that she said damn too. I could have sworn it was rotten.

So let's see, not counting tonight's show, Gypsy has played 33 previews and 29 regular for a grand total of 64 performances and how of those shows have been attended by at least person on this board? LOL. I went 4/29, 4/30, and 5/1 but I live out of town so I had no choice but to go the same week.

So did some of you go to AGYG many times too or do you just like Gypsy better?

I didn't see AGYG as much because I was a highschool student at the time. I didn't go into Manhattan as much, and I didn't have the money (I don't even think I had a job at that point because I had surgery in the summer of '99).

I don't mind admitting that I have seen Gypsy quite a few times already; but, yes, it is my favorite musical (even before Bernadette was in it). I also enjoyed Annie Get Your Gun quite a bit, so if that was currently running, I would probably see it more than I did when I was 17 year's old. For the record, I only saw it twice (2-2-99 and 6-10-00).
Gypsy is not the only show I see more than the average person, but it is the show I have seen the most; and will continue to see as long as I can afford it.

I went to see AGYG 9 times, once with Susan Lucci (I was not impressed) and once with Reba (I liked Reba) but as always Bernadette was the best.

I have seen Gypsy four times so far. I have basically gone once every paycheck. LOL Gypsy is the perfect show so i wouldn't mind seeing every night if i could afford too.

The record for most time i have seen a show is Seussical. I saw it 15 times.
