I'm well aware of an actors life and don't think I ever stated it was a life of leisure or that Marissa was not hard working just that I felt it was terrible that she won for her performance over Bernadette's performance and that everything that Bernadette has done with this role she deserves to be recognized by her peers "for her performances" which is the point of the awards.
Let's just hope things go better at the Tonys.

I'm not surprised that Gypsy will not tour--assuming that the mention in the Times is true. This production really is set around Bernadette, and she may not want to tour. Besides, didn't I read somewhere--too much information these days--that she is going to London with this? Or is that a figment of my imagination? (Of course, there are other actresses who could play the part, but not like her, and not with her drawing power.)
Interesting thought about Tony voters voting for something that will tour; seems to dilute the value of the Tony, and make it more of just a "business" deal, eh?

"Haul out an old musical or play: you might get a thrillingly renewed classic with big stars like this year's Gypsy or Long Day's Jouney into Night (Neither will tour). More often you'll get a handsome stilted retread like last year's Oklahoma!"
I'm not surprised that Peters isn't going to tour since she often talks about not liking to tour, but it makes me wonder about this productions future once Peters leaves. I'm no producer, but can a $7.5 mill. musical return its investment in a year. AGYG did but that was with the Weisslers producing and I think AGYG was a smaller show. I really have no idea what I'm talking about. I did read recently on maybe the Sondheim Society website or musical stages?? that the Gypsy producers were going to bring it with Peters to London but . . .

I downloaded the Media Player 3 times before I got it to work! The first 2 times I downloaded but did not execute the files. (Hard to believe that in another life, I actually worked on-and did trouble shooting for- sick computers --and users!)

From: Fla | posted: 5/19/2003 at 12:35:19 AM ET I'm out of town so I'm a little out of it- were the Drama Desk awards on TV in the NY area, or just online? If they were on TV and anyone taped them, would anyone be willing to make a copy for me? I'd be happy to pay tape costs, shipping, whatever
Thanks!

I was so annoyed because one of my closest friends goes to LaGuardia Highschool (she's a Drama Major), and that is where the awards took place. I wanted to kill her for not getting us tickets, but she didn't even realize that the awards were taking place there until I told her. Man, and I thought I was oblivious.
AHHHH, just venting.

From Internet Network: 64.12.96.x | posted: 5/19/2003 at 11:37:23 AM ET Just checked to Drama Desk site of recent past winners and in 1999 the DD chose Parade and Charlie Brown for New Musical and Revival, the Tonys picked Fosse and AGYG. Obviously I'm still hoping that Peters will win the Tony, alhough in his column today Mandelbaum says "The negative press that surrounded Peters' post-opening absences may have destroyed her chances for a Tony" Anyway his next column about understudies he has seen (especially for Peters) should be interesting.

BEST ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL:
Is it Bernadette or Marissa? The odds leans towards Bernadette for Mama Rose
in "Gypsy." Even though Merman was overlooked for a Tony in the original
production, Angela Lansbury and Tyne Daly got the award for this great role.
It's the "Medea" of musical comedy. However, Peters has missed several
performances and some critics feel she's not right for the role. I want
Marissa to win. After all, Bernadette already has two Tonys and Marissa is
simply adorable as the slightly chunky, but spunky heroine of "Hairspray."
But I think Bernadette will pull it out in the end.
