From: NYC | posted: 4/24/2003 at 9:41:19 PM ET Hi! I have never seen a broadway show before, but I am going to see GypsyGypsy this summer. I was wondering how formal it is to go. Do you wear like a dress, or would dress pants be appropriate? I can't wait to see the show!

A dress is certainly fine, but dress pants are also appropriate. I wore dress slacks when I saw it last week, if that's any help (it was so cold last Thursday there was no freaking way I was wearing a skirt). Enjoy the show - it's wonderful!!

I think people who wear jeans, T-shirts, etc. to a Broadway show should be ashamed of themselves! It's completely disrespectful! Sneakers too (unless they have a medical reason). I just cringe when I see someone dressed Inappropriately in the theater.

don't sweat it too much, just look presentable.

| posted: 4/25/2003 at 1:14:47 PM ET See, I understand what you mean about the whole look. Some people (like teens, and women in their early 20's) can pull off "dressy" jeans, if they wear a nice pair of strappy shoes, and maybe a taylored shirt or something. But many people don't do that. I often see too many people in poorly fitted jeans, with dirty old sneakers and sweatshirts! UGGG, just thinking about it annoys me.
I guess because I was raised going to Broadway Shows and other NYC theatrical events. My parents would have never let me even leave the house for such an evening dressed in jeans.
Also, when I see people who wear like the Broadway Show labled shirts to the show itself. Ex: Someone wearing a Gypsy T-shirt to go see Gypsy. That's just weird and a little disturbing.
I also think it depends on the show. Like I might (probably not though) wear dressy jeans to see a show like "Urinetown," but I would dress much more formaly for "Nine" or "Gypsy."
This may sound snotty and rude, but people do pass judgments on what other people wear to a Broadway show. You can tell who has class and who doesn't.

From: London | posted: 4/26/2003 at 4:14:50 AM ET you see, its completely different here. London has all these grand theatres that have been there for hundreds and hundreds of years so I suppose going to the theatre isn't such a formal occasion anymore. Most people only dress up for an evening performance but people just wear comfy stuff for mantinees, maybe tracksuit bottoms because you want to be nice and comfortable if your going to sit there for a few hours. Its different if you go and see a posh concert like The Proms or something, you do have to dress up then.
Trust me, in the West End people get funny looks if their all dolled up! When I went to see Taboo, Rosie O'Donnel was there and she was wearing jeans and a big white shirt that had become translucent with sweat- lovely(!)- and her entourage weren't much smarter. lol
they say bernadette's wonderful..........and she is

| posted: 4/26/2003 at 3:16:34 PM ET LOL yeah, but Rosie O'Donnell usually dresses like a slob anyway. Plus, it's her show. She can pretty much wear what she wants...as unsofisticated as it may be.
I do agree that Matinees are much less formal than evening performances...but I still wouldn't wear sweats and t-shirts; or sneakers.
