Ken Mandelbaum on Broadway.com has another installment today in his fascinating series on the history of Gypsy. This one's really good. Also, Andrew Gans on Playbill mentions that he will print an interview with Bernadette in an upcoming issue. Maybe next Friday? And Riedel is at it again. In his column today, He refers to Gypsy as the "troubled revival". Where does he get his gossip? I'm assuming he just makes a lot of it up.

Thanks Karen. I love Fridays-Riedel and Diva Talk!

Mandelbaum articles-I really like the history of things- I'm learning a lot about Gypsy and, just some good theatre stuff;

Playbill interview-I'd guess they'll print it close to opening night?

Riedel-well, he set Gypsy up over the last few months with his gossipy bits, so now he can call it "troubled"-who says its troubled? Riedel! Has he really talked with anyone in the know? Would anyone connected with Gypsy talk with him? Could it all be totally fabricated, or, just the usual give and take of a show in previews?

What I really don't like is that other columnists are now picking up that aspect; the NY Times on April 11 mentioned Gypsy, and said "The Internet innuendo and tabloid sniping about "Gyspy[sic]" has already begun, even though critics won't see the production for two and a half weeks."

Here's something nice for a change in the Post. If the Post has Reidel at least they also have Liz Smith. Do these two cancel each other out and do people take either seriously? Wonder if Reidel would be trying to pollute the atmosphere so much for Gypsy if he were given the same acces he had to AGYG where he wrote an article after following the show for four months. Anyway, here's the relevant part of Smith's column:

SPEAKING of a suddenly revitalized Broadway theater, everybody is fighting to get into the previews of "Gypsy," which opens May 1. Nicole Kidman and Steven Spielberg are just two who have already come and gone.

One of the most passionately discriminating persons I know, working in theater, has come back simply raving. She loved everything about it, including Bernadette Peters, the star. And before seeing the preview, she had a very skeptical mind-set.

The producers insist that changes being made now in the show were always planned.

Andrew Gans' interview with Ms. Peters will run near the end of the month, and will also appear in the May print edition of Playbill.
