| posted: 4/13/2003 at 1:33:31 PM ET I watched it again (even though I have it on tape) because I hadn't seen it in a long, long time, and I thought of something very ammusing. When Bernadette was asked what her favorite sound is she said, "Rain."
I just thought it was funny because I was filling out an online survey the other day that someone sent me, and it asked, "What is your favorite sound?" and I said, "Rain!"
It really is such a relaxing noise. LOL

From: Arizona | posted: 4/16/2003 at 7:16:33 PM ET I happened across the Bravo repeat by accident. I had been waiting to see it again for a long time because I wanted to tape Bernadette doing 'I Got Lost In His Arms' from AGYG. Most ordinary people would think my reason for wanting to do this was trivial or absurd, but you Bernadette fans will understand completely.
First you have to know that I saw AGYG four different times roughly equally spaced throughout the run......and the beautiful thing about theatre, of course, is it's ability to change and evolve.
Anyway, somewhere after the first year or so on the second chorus where she sings 'there you go.....there you go' Bernadette raised the second 'go' note (D) an octave in the show. The number is much more dramatic that way and is not the way it is recorded or written by Mr. Berlin for that matter. Well on Bravo she also raised it an octave.......so now I have it on tape, and my life is complete.
Well almost complete. I still would like to be Marvin Laird for a day

Registered: 6/11/2002 | posted: 4/16/2003 at 9:50:32 PM ET FINALLY!!! Someone has noticed!
I thought I was the only one who completely taken by Bernadette raising the second "There you go" up the octive! I whole-heartedly agree with you, Jim! It's dramatic effect is unbelievable.
Has anyone else noticed the beauty about the arrangements for the songs that Bernadette sings? Whoever does the arranging for songs that Bernadette performs is, in my opinion, a genius.
Take "Being Alive", for example. I had always loved the song before I heard it performed on her Carnegie Hall CD-- but then, some musical mastermind got ahold of the score and transposed it into a gorgeous key, added a stirring intro as well as a powerful and climatic key change. That is the reason I always look forward to seeing Bernadette in concert, because I know I will hear a familiar song and view it in a completely different light thanks to a new arrangement some composer has made. I hope I'm making sense here...

Registered: 3/10/2001 | posted: 4/16/2003 at 10:28:06 PM ET I have to say that's definitely one of my fave songs Bernadette has sung. And it was definitely one of my fave moments in AGYG. I remember the first time I heard her sing that part an octave higher...I got chills!Sometimes a director will make changes but I think many times, with Bernadette, it just sort of falls into place that way. She is a very experienced performer and probably feels a lot more at home on stage and making changes like that than most. I'm sure singing a song everynight 8 times a week can get somewhat boring too( even if you love the song) and like the consummate performer that she is, I'm sure she's always looking for ways to make her performances better and better. I just feel bad for the actresses that followed her in the role because they were sort of stuck...the couldn't copy everything Bernadette did in the role..they had to make it their own yet they still wanted to make their performance stand out.I don't think anyone's OLD FASHIONED WEDDING was funnier than Bernadette and Tom's!!! When Crystal ( or maybe it was Reba) joined I remember her bringing "my heart" up a few notes. Which I thought sounded great! She also yodeled in CAN'T GET A MAN WITH A GUN...which always seemed to be a big hit with the audiences. This was done in Jekyll & Hyde too...one of the men playing J&H eventually started singing "damn all the odds" an octave higher and holding it out longer. It was his decision to do that and it worked so well that he did it from then on out ...soon after every other J&H to follow him sang it that way( well if they could hit the note LOL). Bernadette changed CAN'T GET A MAN WITH A GUN for her concerts to a little. For the " with a gu-u-un" part. I was just so used to hearing it the way it was done in the show I could never get used to her new way of doing it.

From: Arizona | posted: 4/17/2003 at 8:54:34 AM ET Thanks guys.......I am very glad I'm not the only one that noticed that change!
I am not totally sure, but suspect that Marvin does most of the arranging. I know on Bravo I got a glimpse of the sheet music during 'Sooner or Later' and it was handwritten and certainly his style.
For some reason I have recently begun to appreciate the coy, subtle nuances in that number and Marvin's and extraordinary accompaniment.
Anyway Marvin and Bernadette's music fits like hand and glove, thus my desire to be Marvin for a day.
I agree with you all that the evolution in AGYG was indeed fun to watch. I am sure you will see the same in Gypsy.
As for my trip to Gypsy, it will most likely have to wait until fall sooooooo keep all the great posts coming. I am envious of those of you that are close enough to get there already.
Jim.

"I Got Lost In His Arms" has always been one of my favorites simply because of that higher "Go." It just brings you to this great, dramatic ending that gives me chills!
I think every song that Bernadette sings on this recording is so distinctly hers, even though they have been sung by other artists before. That's what I love about her as a perormer; she knows how to make a song or a character her own.

I saw AGYG about a month after it opened and then Bernadette's last performance. Couple of the other changes were the repeating of the all the animals she's trying to sell in the beginning and her scooting closer to Frank when they first meet and Tom's reaction. All of which added to the show.
Bernadette's arrangements usually are wonderful. They give a fresh take to the numbers while still respecting the original material. It would be great to know of the seven arranger/ orchestrators listed on the Carnegie album who did what.
