From: Locality? O_o; | posted: 3/19/2003 at 10:00:46 PM ET You see, I'm doing a biography presentation on Bernadette, but there's something I can't decide on. What do you think would be the biggest or turning point event in her life?
Please, help!

Gypsy when she was a kid was probably her first role in a big production even though it was a tour.
Dames at Sea was certainly her big first professional break. She was no longer a child actor and was really noticed for her abilities and many people could see she had a true future in the business.
Her career certainly faded a bit in the early to mid 70s. More on Broadway than any place else but she didn't have tremendous success during those years because I think it was hard for her to find her niche because she is so unique. She had some success in movies with Steve Martin but her film career has never taken off.
Sondheim and Sunday were certainly responsible for bringing her back to Broadway and putting her in the category of a true Broadway Leading Lady. And I would think her tour de force performance in Song and Dance solidified her as a Broadway Legend - the kind who sells tickets before she steps on stage and is recognized by simply her first name.
I think this new production of Gypsy could be another turning point for her. She very much had the kewpie doll image in the 70s and early 80s. I don't feel she really did anything to keep that image but it seems to have followed her which keeps some people from recognizing her for the amazing actress that she is. If she pulls off Rose, I think she might really shed that previous kewpie doll image and be considered an actress with very few limitations and really silence her detractors.
Well thanks for letting me ramble.
