The performance was fantastic. Bernadette was magnificent. Funny, sexy and heartbreaking depending on the moment. Elaine Stritch was quite good. She is struggling with some lines but supposedly Angela did too in the beginning so I hope with a few more performances under her belt she will have it nailed. She seems sadder than Angela's portrayal and it works.
Bernadette looked so beautiful and so tiny next to most of the cast. It was a bit humorous remembering Catherine next to Alex Hanson and then seeing Bernadette. She is essentially the same height as the girl playing her daughter who I felt sorry for during Weekend in the Country. She and Bernadette had to freeze in the shadows in a hug and the girl had to bend her knees to hug Bernadette and then was stuck in that position through the freeze.
Bernadette's Send in the Clowns was just devastingly beautiful. It was just WOW.
The entrance applause for both ladies was substantial and the curtain call went on forever. Everyone literally jumped to their feet at the very beginning of it. At the end I saw Elaine say "now what do we do?". Bernadette smiled and said "Now we go home."
There seems to be true affection between the two of them. Bernadette helped Elaine out on one of her missing lines and Elaine's response "You are adorable".
If you weren't there tonight and don't have tickets yet well... what the heck is your problem?? Lol
Oh and one last thing: with no disrespect to Miss Zeta-Jones who I thought was quite good in the role, I hope Trevor Nunn is kicking himself for not casting Bernadette first. She clearly proved tonight she should have opened the show and that Tony should be sitting on her shelf!!
"Particular mention must be made of Bernadette Peters, who turns up briefly in a sort of sparkly Glinda the Good costume. She's the reluctant muse sent to help Alice with her writing. The muse is dressed like Oz, sounds like Queens and behaves like a bored student adviser." Alice Film Review, The New York Times, December 25, 1990
"I'm one star away from Dolly Parton ... and Raymond Massey is between us. I hope we don't suffocate him." Bernadette Peters receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, April 24, 1987

From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 7/14/2010 at 7:43:30 AM ET Listening to Send In The Clowns, exquisite! Already there's a rumour started here in London that this production may come back home next year and Bernadette will make her long overdue West End debut. Sounds far too good to be true, the West End transfer of this Trevor Nunn production wasn't exactly a hit last year. It's probably only wishful-thinking, but who knows? Perhaps if the box-office receipts for Bernadette are really good in NY they might consider it. So please all go as often as you can. Every performance please. Thanks very much in advance.
