I saw the previous weeks episode of Animal Presinct earlier in the week. That show can be so hard to watch! How anyone could harm or neglect an animal I'll never understand!! As luck would have it I got home at 1:30 am lastnight and was flipping through channels and came across the episode of Animal Presinct with Broadway Barks. Did anyone else find it ironic that they showed a dog who had its throat slit by a collar that was too tight...just like Stella...
I'm really glad they did a feature on this. First of all it showed how much hard work all of these people...and especially its creator, Mary and Bernadette, put into Broadway Barks! I honestly don't think people realize how much work Mary and Bernadette and countless other people put into this event. Its not just a once a year gig. They work at this throughout the year doing various things. I know Bernadette is an avid promoter of the CACC and the ASPCA..whenever people are looking to adopt a dog or cat she refers them there.
And secondy, hopefully this moved lots of people who were watching Animal Presinct to adopt dogs...namely those who are bigger and more intimidating. And to even come to the event next year to adopt a dog or cat. Broadway Barks helped
26 animals find homes this year. That's 26 dogs and cats that may not have found homes and may have had to have been euthanized!
Its so happy to see that Maximus and all the other adorable dogs found homes!! I think I might actually have a really adorable picture of Max from Broadway Barks. I could scan it but I don't think there's anyway to put it in a post...is there Kevin?

OMG! I was thinking the same exact thing when I watched it last week!
Animal Precinct is a very difficult show to watch sometimes. I always want every single animal on there. LOL
Truthfully, I think the bigger the dog the bigger the heart. Most (not all) smaller dogs are nastier than bigger dogs.
I mean, I have 2 small dogs that I love, but I would never rule out a big loveable dog. I wish I lived on a big farm sometimes so I could take in all of these mistreated and neglected animals.

It is a huge undertaking but it is getting a bit easier each year as we get more and more used to doing it. Of course, there is always the added difficulty of it getting bigger every year - more shelters involved, etc. But that is a good difficulty. :-) I was also quite involved in FIDO/NYC before it disbanded. It was amazing the work that went into that organization. Makes me tired just thinking about it. LOL
Bottom Line: Spay and Neuter and adopt animals from shelters so that one day there will be no need for a Broadway Barks!

Registered: 3/10/2001 | posted: 1/12/2003 at 9:40:20 PM ET Actually I think this past Broadway Barks was probably one of the most difficult for Bernadette in part because Mary wasn't there for the event. I'm not going to get into details but she spent a lot more time actually being at the event this year more than ever. She was also a little more hands on(publicly).
I personally think it will be emotionally difficult for Bernadette, Mary and everyone else involved in providing care and help for animals until there is no longer animals that need homes and are being killed because they can't get adopted.
Of course spaying and neutering your dogs and cats is a wonderful idea but as long as there are dogs who are being neglected or harmed or just don't have homes to live in there will always be a need for Broadway Barks. I don't even want to think what would have happened if we had never went to the animal shelters and adopted my dogs!!
I actually took 3 years of Veterinary classes. The only reason why am not doing it today is that its too hard for me to watch animals die and actually having to put them to sleep...even if it is "for their own good". Watching animals come off of anesthesia was hard enough. Doing dessections and autopsies wasn't pleasant either.

| posted: 1/13/2003 at 12:44:38 PM ET I use to want to be a vet when I was younger, but I couldn't even dissect a dead pig in highschool.
I was talking to my brother's girlfriend yesterday, and she is a big animal lover. She actually rescues dogs. A few times she has found dogs that have been abused or were lost and she brings them home and either finds their owners (for the lost ones) or finds new homes for the abused ones. I told her I'm gonna have to bring her to Broadway Barks next year. LOL The ones she can't find homes for she keeps.
I just like the fact that there are people like her out there, doing good things for animals.
Wouldn't it be great if Broadway Barks got so popular that it had to move it's location to Central Park or something. I know the idea is to keep it on Broadway, but I bet moving it to a bigger, more spacious location would draw a bigger crowd.....especially since a lot of people walk their dogs in the park and stuff....they might not even be aware of Broadway Barks!?

I'm pretty sure they still dissect the animals here. I haven't been in highschool in 3 years, so I'm not totally sure....but they do have to give you an option. I never did it, I walked out of the class and told my teacher that unless he wanted to see me be sick all over the room, he wouldn't make me stay. LOL
I don't care if the animal is already dead or not! The only people who should have to dissect something is medical students (to learn about their job)...not Sophomores in highschool!

and i'd love to see the programs done away with. it is unnecessary there are computer programs that can teach anatomy.
