I don't think she has any specific religion. If I had to make a guess, I'd go with some personally designed New Agey blend of very vague Judeo-Christian concepts liberally spiced with borrowings from Asian philosophies like Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, etc. The kind of thing that tons of celebrities and increasingly large numbers of regular people espouse. You know, where people make statements like "I'm spiritual, not religious." She's definitely not an atheist or agnostic. She's made too many references in interviews to God and an afterlife to be one of those.

Just guessing, though! Pure speculation.

Do you by any chance have links to any of those interviews, Karen? I've never read anything where she addresses God or the afterlife.

Hmm, good question. I'll try to find some. Just to clarify though--I didn't mean she proclaimed her belief outright, but that she obliquely mentioned God or heaven in passing, with the implication that she accepted their existence. Anyone who remembers anything, help me out.

I agree with Karen to an extent. I don't know if I would go into as many specifics as Karen did. That's not to say Karen is wrong, I just don't know if I've read enough from Bernadette to give that many details. She has said in at least one interview that she is spiritual but not religious. And we all know she was raised catholic though that doesn't seem to be a religion she followed at all in adulthood. You can also notice a lot in her filmed concerts/appearances that she often says during her curtain call(though its not audible over the applause), "God Bless You" or something like that to the audience. Her London Concert is a perfect example.

Moljul, you have to remember that I'm just pulling these specific details out of my imagination, not basing them on superfluous things like facts. Why waste time being a member of the reality-based community?

LOL And if it wasn't clear, I wasn't saying you were wrong. I'm sure you are more read on the subject. I was just clarifying which points of yours I was agreeing with because I had also read them or heard Bernadette speak of them. Not sure I've ever come to as detailed a conclusion that you have.

But there's nothing more exhilarating than jumping to unwarranted conclusions. You should try it sometime!

On that basis, here's mine ... it sounds like she's a Theosophist in all but name.

Oh, I hope she's not a follower of Madame Blavatsky. That woman was scary looking.

I just remembered that I once read a bio of Marvin Laird in which he was described as an adherent of Science of Mind a.k.a. Church of Religious Science, which is definitely one of those New Age spiritual hybrid thingies. Not that that necessarily has anything to do with Bernadette, of course. Far be it from me to suggest that she must belong to the same cult as her musical director. She very easily could have her own cult!

I remember reading a long time ago in an interview that she was a Christian Scientist (I think back in the 1970's or maybe 1980's) but I don't know if she really was or still is. I also know that she occasionally wears crosses but I don't know if that's because she's a Christian or if it's a fashion thing. I almost asked once, when I met her back in 1993, because she was wearing a large cross around her neck, and it kind of surprised me (and it kinda made me stare at her chest which made her give me a slightly dirty look, because I think she thought I was looking at something else.) I had previously thought of her as being non-religious/new-agey/alternative "religion" kinda person. But I wasn't sure if asking would be too personal a question (I know she doesn't like personal questions.)

FWIW, I have an aunt who's Religous Science and it's pretty generic, despite all the new-agey stuff surrounding the teachings, it seems more like trying to explain God through Science than just another cult. I don't know if Bernadette is into that or not, but it seems kinda up her alley, as she seems pretty open-minded/accepting "spiritual" wise.

I agree that it's not really a cult. I was just joking about that.

One practice that Bernadette has stated is very important to her is meditation. She's been talking about that for years, going back to the early 70s. She's talked about it so much it almost seems that it's at the core of her spiritual beliefs. Now I'm not exactly sure if she ever publicly stated what kind of meditation she practices, but wouldn't that imply some sort of connection with East Asian traditions? Even if only in a very mixed, eclectic way.

She was raised Italian (Sicilian)Catholic. It is my opinion (jut speculation)that she has not deviated a whole lot from that. Although she did marry a nice Jewih boy!!

And we haven't even touched on Zoroastrianism or Santeria yet. Surely there must be some connections there too. This woman is a veritable ecumenical conference in herself.
