| posted: 1/6/2007 at 8:23:11 PM ET Am I the only one missing Bernadette on Broadway these days? I feel like the concerts that she has lined up are great and I personally can't wait to see her in April in the Bronx but overall, I feel like Bernadette really belongs on a Broadway stage. I don't know if anyone feels this way but I figured I'd put it out there. Here's hoping she comes back to broadway soon!

One gets so depressed about the state of the musical, fearing that it died and was replaced by corporate entertainment machines, but then every year or two a Light In The Piazza or a Grey Gardens or a brilliant Sweeney Todd revival comes along and one realizes that there are still creative, personal shows with great female roles (even on ultra-commercialized Broadway).
I just hope Bernadette gets back into one, sooner rather than later. It's where she belongs. We need her!

| posted: 2/13/2008 at 11:09:08 PM ET i have to bump this because I came across it and Karen, you couldn't have worded it better. I can not STAND new broadway. Ugh I am discusted to no end. I can't remember the last time I acually cried in a theatre at how beautiful a show is, if I have it's been running on Broadway from a previous decade. All it is now is who can make more money and how they can entertain the new "Teeny-Bopper" audience. No offense but it's driving me crazy. For example at my college they JUST started up a Choir Club and I've been singing since I was little so of course I signed up. Well there are only 7 members so far but I was elected president, but to get to the point of course there are two girls there (Mind you this a choir... if you're going to do showtunes you have to do ensemble numbers) so I suggested "Sunday" from Sunday in the Park with George along with maybe "Wheels of A Dream" from Ragtime. And what do they chime in with? Lets do Hairspray, lets do WICKED! I wanted to start crying. Where has the beauty of the theatre gone? Kids who are just realizing musical theatre and are going to shows are getting a wrong image! Don't get me wrong some of these new shows are great for entertainment and a flashy aray of things but, like you said, only once in a while does a gorgeous show come along such as Grey Gardens or Light in the Piazza. Sorry if I'm offending anyone but I can't wait for this "commercial" stage of musical theatre to be over with.
whew.
thanks for listening.

The reality is though that musical theatre has to be commercial in order to survive. One could even argue that shows like Hairspray and Wicked actually introduce a whole new group of people to musical theatre who wouldn't normally have gone -- those are the people who might listen to Sunday In The Park With George and find it tuneless and boring -- lots of people do, you know! But, on the other hand, they might just find that a fire has been started and Wicked & Hairspray will lead to a life-long appreciation of more "artistic" and worthwhile musical theatrical experiences.

From: NYC | posted: 2/14/2008 at 7:54:02 AM ET Oh Katie, there's such a wealth of possibility for your choir. I wish I had known about so many of the old shows when I was in college - but thanks to Karen and a few others kids, I'm learning. They not only entertain, they teach and exhilerate! I'm not only talking classics from Rodgers & Hammerstein, Sondheim, Lerner & Loew, but Rodger's "No Strings" which he wrote without Hammerstein, Jule Styne & Yip Harburg's "Darling of the Day," Bock & Harnick's "She Loves Me," Harold Rome's "I Can Get It For You Wholesale," Styne & Merrill's "Prettybelle," Jerry Herman's "Mack & Mabel,"....well I could go on all day.
Unfortunately Scottie is right about commercial theatre, but there is a subculture of people who love the old recordings out there - all you have to do is look - and get the music for your choir and spread the wealth. Fortunately, in NYC, we have Broadway by the Year and Encores to help with this. You can also watch old performances on www.bluegobo.com to get great ideas. Talk your choir into compromising - for every new song, throw in an old song. I can't wait to hear what you come up with!

From: NYC | posted: 2/14/2008 at 10:15:39 AM ET Katie, join hiptix - $20 for Roundabout productions (including Sunday) for people under 35 - it's free to join. Also, don't forget that with your student id, the possibilities of getting a student rush ticket for almost any show are great. I'm pretty sure that Roundabout sells student rush seats in advance.
Sunday is scheduled to be open until May 18th.

Katherine Hepburn in "Coco", "Always Mademoiselle", what a wonderful sequence! If that excerpt is anything to go by it looks to be a terrific role for a "mature" female lead. Beautiful music by Andre Previn, lyrics & book by Alan Jay Lerner, stunning Chanel costumes .... how about a revival with a true Broadway legend in the lead role?
